This novel came out of a long, complex dream the author had in 2008 when he was in France after having visited briefly in La Rochelle, a port town on the southwestern coast. It concerns a small group of French soldiers who had been drafted and were preparing to go to the front in 1915. Later parts of the dream took place at the Wstern Front, and still later scenes after the war's 1918 end. The author thinks it is true story of actual events and real men, the narrator having been one of those soldiers who survived the Great War. 20th Century Historical Fiction World War I War Solider
