Story
While literacy is taken for granted in modern society, there’s another essential aspect of communication that is often overlooked: social intelligence. Without it, our personal and professional relationships suffer shallowness and often fizzle out. Networking, romance, and friendships are all incredibly challenging without a healthy level of social awareness. Unlike learning to read, however, many of us don’t become socially “literate” until far later in life; and even then, the journey towards true social intelligence is usually characterized by trial and error.

Story
In richly anecdotal detail, Goleman brings to life the field of social neuroscience that has emerged in the decade since the publication of Emotional Intelligence. He shows that, far more than we are consciously aware, our daily encounters with parents, spouses, bosses, and even strangers shape our brains and affect cells throughout our bodies. Our relationships create a setpoint for our daily moods and influence our immune response; they are crucial to achievement in students and workers; they determine whether or not some genes are expressed, for good or ill.

Some are able to use those techniques, others are not. This book will give you plenty of examples and scenarios where you can recognize individuals that use traits of persuasion, manipulation, and influence in both a negative fashion and for personal gain.

powerful book.
The most powerful example used is how people on a common platform, when something is not ordinary, can be quickly calmed down by the simple, social connection of seeing how others are perceiving the event. From that construct we can now all see why it is much easier for us to communicate in person as opposed to reading something or talking on a phone.

Story
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.
