Story
A dead man walks into a police station. He tells a tale - bizarre as it is grotesque - of kidnap and organ harvesting. John Baden's story of being held prisoner for 12 years sounds far-fetched - but it's all about to get much, much stranger. DI Ben Westphall has been given the case because of his background in MI6. He also has a knack for getting inside people's heads and seeing things others would miss. Westphall is no ordinary detective, and this is no ordinary case.

Publisher's summary
One winter's night, a lone figure arrives on foot in a remote Pennine village.
The next morning, as the first heavy snow begins to fall, a man's body is discovered in the village churchyard.
Anne Tilston, one of three sisters living in a brooding run-down house in the shadow of the church, realises that the dead man is her father, a disgraced former senior police officer long estranged from his family.
As DCI Kenny Murrain's team arrive in the village to investigate the unexplained death, a further body is discovered in a nearby field - a young man from the village with no apparent connection to Tilston or his daughters.
With the snow continuing to fall, another body is discovered, and Murrain finds himself stranded with his team in the sisters' house with a seemingly motiveless killer waiting outside in the night.

Absolutely superb
If you are a fan of this genre you will love this book. It had me hooked from the first chapter. It will keep you guessing right up until the end. The setting... a snowbound, isolated hamlet...only adds to the suspense.
Walters is brilliant at setting up blind alleys and boggling plot twists!
Greg Wagland is excellent as the narrator. His narration is smooth and flowing. The characters individual without being forced or eccentric.
Although this is book three in the Detective Murrain books you can easily enjoy this as a stand alone novel.

True suspense in frozen landscape
A well crafted novel with intertwining storylines, from Alex Walters, expertly narrated by Greg Wagland. The quirks and skills of the Manchester police officers in the Midlands environment, albeit snow-covered and isolated in this instance, provide suspenseful reading!

Interesting Plot. Lots of twists and turns.
I enjoyed listening to this third book , as it took the previous two books for me to recognise all the main characters without having to think. The Author’s style of switching from first names to surnames , sometimes with their title added , I had found disconcerting.
Without giving away a spoiler. How did he get out of his handcuffs?

Interesting story
I enjoyed the story but found a few aspects not credible. Without giving anything away there is a relationship between two characters revealed towards the end that I found hard to believe was not widely known before hand. I really like the narrators voice but at times it was hard to distinguish between characters. Despite this, I still enjoyed the story.

Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery - a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago. A tragic coincidence - or something more twisted? To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues.
