Publisher's Summary

Eloise "Lou" Hansen is graduating from Columbia University summa cum laude, and she's ready to conquer the world. Just a few minor problems: She has no job, no prospects, and she's moving back into her childhood bedroom. Lou is grimly determined to stick to a rigorous schedule to get a job and get out of her parents' house.

Shelly "Mama Shell" Hansen, on the other hand, is ecstatic, and just as determined to keep her at home. Who else will help her hide her latest binge-shopping purchases from her husband, go to SoulCycle with her, and hold her hand during Botox shots?

Smothered is a hilarious roman à clef told via journal entries, text messages, emails, bills, receipts, tweets, doctor's prescriptions, job applications and rejections, parking tickets, and pug pictures, chronicling the year that Lou moves back home after college.

Told from Lou's point-of-view, Smothered tells the story of two young(ish) women, just trying to get it right, and learning that just because we all grow up doesn't mean we necessarily have to grow old. (After all, what is Juvaderm for?)

My favorite book this year

This captivating story had me hooked from the beginning. The author’s voice has so much charm and the words create nonstop excitement! I refused to put the book down. Move over Sophie Kinsella, Autumn Chiklis is in the house. And I, for one, want to live in the house with the entire fun, bold, fearless family. I guarantee you will love this whimsical book. I hope Ms Chicklis is writing the sequel right now!

Hard to listen to complaints about her privilege

It took me longer than normal to get into this book. I have been extremely fortunate in my life, but this book is a whole new level of privilege. It was painful to listen to complaints of her mom redoing her room with expensive finishes, buying her a fitness membership, and bringing home healthy juices for the family. As a recent grad, I felt myself constantly yelling at the main character. The book was entertaining enough, but I found it extremely frustrating and not the slightest bit inspiring to new grads. When I first started listening I was furious when I realized I had chosen to buy this as an audiobook since it's written in the form of texts, instagram posts, tweets, and journal entries, but the narrator did a good job of making it all understandable. I probably would not recommend this book to anyone, but it was somewhat enjoyable.
