Booze, bullseyes and (more) booze.

Humanity has come a long way in the 500,000 years since Neanderthal man first started chucking spears around. Or has it? In his blisteringly funny new book, former professional player Wayne Mardle, whose crowd-pleasing antics were even more lively off stage than they were on, blows the lid off one of the UK's biggest televised sports.

Known in darts circles as Hawaii 501 on account of his colourful Hawaiian shirts (yours for just 45 quid - he's got a garage full of them), Mardle remains one of the planet's most recognisable players, having performed on the world stage during a professional career that saw him play all the greats and, quite frankly, lose to most of them.

In this witty (frequently), honest (largely) and poignant (twice) guide to life both on and off the oche, Mardle delivers world-class advice - such as why you shouldn't go on a two-day Vegas booze bender before a major PDC final, or how to avoid going live on European TV with a string of expletives so outrageous that clips are still replayed, years later, on Belgian telly. Some are lessons Mardle learned the hard way; others, like why it's best to avoid being sued by a well-known biscuit manufacturer, are gleaned from green-room gossip spanning decades.

Insight & Hilarity in one package.

As an avid amateur dart player I found this book very entertaining! while I'll never be a pro, it was fun to hear about what it would be like if I was that good.

Magnificent Mardle

If you love sport (with darts obviously being the best one) you’ll love this book. Made me laugh out loud on the train and get funny looks, however it will also help you understand the world of darts and what plays deal with.

A fantastic read 10/10

back in the day

if you want loads of stories about what it's really like to be a pro darts player, what goes on backstage, anecdotes of players on tour...don't read.

this book's nice but the backstage door of pro darts remains firmly shut.

a mate of mine listened to this before me and dared me to consume a glass of wine every time the phrase 'back in the day' was uttered. i was battered within a few minutes. the aforementioned cliché even occures multiple times in the same sentence!

this book is lovely as is wayne. if you've a sky sports subscription and you've been watching darts semi-regularly over the past few years you will hear nothing new.

if you're brand new to darts you'll enjoy this book, otherwise see this as a bland and risk adverse cashcow and fair play to wayne for that.

middle (or should i pronounce that mid-ell) of the road easy listen.

i can't wait for an ex-pro to publish a true 'warts and all' insight, then they'll hit 5 stars and be an overnight sensation. trick missed with this one

Absolutely Wonderful

Emotional, hilarious, insightful, beautifully read - A genuine joy. Thank you for this, Wayne!

As a darts obsessed teen who hopes to go into punditry/commentary, this book was brilliant and inspiring. And, whilst I won't spoil it, there are some truly howl with laughter moments.

And, without doubt, it was better hearing it read by the great man himself. Any future audiobooks will struggle to follow on from this.

A wonderful experience, I can't recommend it enough.

very good. funny.

Finished it quickly. solid listen. funny. Wanders off 'point' a bit at times into the 5 section, but I didn't mind that. Good background on his darting life. Great stories and some decent advice.

Really enjoyed this book.

Packed with great insights and humour. Always a bonus when the author narrates the book as well. Recommended.
