Publisher's summary

Audible are delighted to present Sleeping Beauty, a unique listening experience for all the family to enjoy over the Christmas season. This exclusive new audio drama has been created in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra and is inspired by Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet music. Marty Ross’s reimagining of the famous fairy story draws on the worlds of folktale and the Brothers Grimm, while the LSO's specially-commissioned new recording, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, weaves through the drama like a rich and majestic film score.

Lacking a legitimate heir, King Lothar (Stephen Fry) brings home a baby girl, Aurora (Phoebe Dynevor). His wife, Queen Ishbel, agrees to raise the child as her own and Princess Aurora grows up to become a beautiful, beloved and free-spirited young woman. But a shadow hangs over the kingdom. Devastated at her loss, Aurora’s mother Cara (Rochenda Sandall) takes her revenge by casting a terrible curse upon the princess and despite her sister Lila's efforts, the spell proves too powerful to break completely. Instead, when the fatal hour arrives, the whole Kingdom falls into an enchanted slumber, until Aurora's true love, Peter, a woodcutter's son (Adam Hugill), sets out on a perilous quest to rescue her.

Also starring: David Ahmad, Karen Bartke, Samantha Beart, Raghad Chaar, Amy Darton, Alyssa Kyria, David Holt, Simon Kane, Harry Myers and Kenton Thomas.

A fresh audio take on a spellbinding classic
No matter how old you get, it’s indisputable there’s a kind of magic in the air during the holiday season. From the twinkling glow of lights from rooftops and window displays alike and the swirling glimmer of snow flurries, winter moments can feel like they’re pulled straight from the pages of a fairy tale. So, what better way to usher in the festivities than with a classic folk story set to a stirring score performed by the London Symphony Orchestra? In the immersive and enchanting Sleeping Beauty, performances by the likes of fan favorite Stephen Fry and Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor are punctuated by a soundscape inspired by ballet master Tchaikovsky’s acclaimed compositions. A retelling of the story of Princess Aurora and the somnolent curse that befalls her kingdom, this engrossing fantastical drama makes the perfect companion for a warm, cozy blanket, a mug of tea, and a windy, wintry day. —Alanna M., Audible Editor

It's ok

I have read some of the original rendition of this story and it not close at all. It is an adaptation at best. The addition of the mother and taking out the fairy was off. I didn't like how Peter was strange and weak frighted at first. It seems to point to an empower women story and bash on men being men.
The performance along with the music was not done well. They clashed more often then not.

Beautiful production

Beautiful production, great cast, & wonderful music. I highly recommend this audiobook. Its not too long and not too short, very much worth the listen from start to end.

Sleeping beauty

So I am a purist. I love the original story. I believe the production and dramatization was great but some of the modernization of it bothered me. I don’t think we need to try to “fix” the past; rather, we can learn to see what was good and grow from what was bad.

Since this was still set in the time of the past, I wish they would have kept it as the original story had it.

JMO Truly a good production and worth the time to listen

Too many dream sequences, it got really boring

I really wanted to love this and I made it through 1.5 hours so I wanted to finish it. But I found myself bored and distracted, especially during Peter's repetitive dream sequences. The acting was great and so was the music. I think it was the writing/story that I found tiresome. Peter would say something, then have a dream about it. Then describe something else, then have another dream about it. I couldn't finish it.

Too Much Going On

I struggled to even listen for a few minutes. It was reminiscent of trying to listen to an audio drama while the radio is on full blast. The orchestra was too loud and playing over the actors. Being neurodivergent this was anxiety inducing and overwhelming I kept going back before reading the synopsis and trying to find overlying apps that may be playing over Audible. Not a fan.

Sleeping Beauty

Music coupled with narration was quite brilliant. Also liked being able to see things through a decidedly feminist glass … nice change from “traditional” fairy tails. Does well portraying historical reasons for why & how some women were characterized, demeaned & persecuted as witches & enchantresses. It was sometimes tough to follow the action, especially during the dream sequences with the various fairies. Confusion & lack of clarity around those points dropped my ratings to 4 stars from 5. Highly recommend to families who may want an additional or alternative to the now standard Nut Cracker performance during the holidays.

Easy listen

I really enjoyed this story. The music was lovely and reminiscent of Disney. It was easy to follow and get into the story, also quite fast paced so there’s no room to get bored. I would love to listen to more like this.

Good but how much vine cutting.

The story is old. Got it.
Performances good i think, especially Auroa.
Overall - could have shortened greatly on the time it takes Peter to get to the castles. How often did they really have to portray Peter fighting more attacking vines? Other than that it was enjoyable. I can see a ballet in my mind’s eye while it played.

One note for parents - the vocabulary may cause a little confusion for younger ones. In addition

This is not a book!

This is a theatrical drama. While it was entertaining, it was not the book I was extremely.
