Publisher's summary

Runt, Cricket, is an honorary beta of Team Greywolf, an elite special ops branch of the Lycan Intelligence Agency. As a member, she poses as a human and collects forensic evidence. Because of her low rank, she is assigned in the rehabilitation of Prince Slade suffering from morphogenesis after his entire pack is murdered, and then his indoctrination as a member of their team. Babysit a psycho, domineering alpha? Not on her watch. To complicate matters, she lusts for Slade. Foolish. A runt can never take an alpha as a mate.

Slade has two choices. Honor his murdered kin and serve Team Greywolf, or once healed, obey King Conan and return to his territory with an alpha mate. Complicating his decision is his relentless desire for the hot sexy little she-wolf, Cricket.

Early into his recovery, Slade and Cricket are sent to investigate missing werewolves. An unstable werewolf seems hardly a match for a former Nazi werewolf bent on bringing on Ragnarok, the destruction of mankind.

Can they stop this evil regime, while conforming to pack law that forbids any chance of them fulfilling their desire for each other?

Critic reviews

" Slade is book one of Ms. Gordon's offshoot of her Alpha Wolf's Pet, taking us back to that world with the emphasis on the L.I.A. One of the best parts of this is we get to see what has been happening to Dominic and Mia from Alpha Wolf's Pet, as well as other characters who return in this new offering. Slade, as her others have done, offers sweet and steamy romance, action of all kinds, good guys, bad guys and some you just aren't sure where they stand but each fits perfectly into this world. I can't wait to get my hands on book two!" (Annetta Sweetko, Fresh Fiction)

Narration ruined the story for me

What did you like best about Slade? What did you like least?

The general story was a good though at times I felt the dialogue was stiff and juvenile.

Would you recommend Slade to your friends? Why or why not?

No - too many similar books available that were better written and narrated

How could the performance have been better?

Yes - the narration really ruined the book for me. It was monotone and pedantic. I was not able to determine which character was speaking by the narration but only by the story. The characters were wooden.

Was Slade worth the listening time?

Not really

Slade

Where does Slade rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Slade was by far one of the best books I have listened to thus far! Although at time the Narrator really got on my nerves because she made her words drag out & I found at times it sounded really tinny...but...the story...HOT, HOT, HOT!

What did you like best about this story?

What I liked best about the story...other than the steamy sex scenes, was the fact that Slade chose Cricket over everything else in his life. That he risked everything for the woman that he loved. That even though he was drugged, he could not forget his one true love.

Which character – as performed by Christine Padovan – was your favorite?

Cricket...although I'm not into the cowering females, when portrayed like that it usually ticks me off but...although she's submissive to her "master" I love when she asserts herself and shows that there is so much more to her than just being a "runt"

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't quite listen all in 1 sitting but...I did finish it all in 1 day! :)

Really good start to a series. This is the first Eva Gordon book that I have listened to. I really enjoyed the story but the narration was a little off for me especially in the beginning. The story pulled me right in but the cadence of the narration was throwing me off. Once I got used to the narrators style then it faded into the background for the most part and I was able to fully enjoy the story.

Action, suspense, intrigue, mystery, romance, steamy scenes and shifters all woven into a really good entertaining story that moves forward at a pretty fast pace.

Great well rounded cast of characters. Cricket was a great character. Strong, intelligent, feisty and determined. She's a fighter who never gives up no matter what life throws at her. Her sarcastic and humorous internal thoughts just made her even more likable. Slade took a bit longer to warm up too. He was rough around the edges in the beginning. But he grows on you quickly.

When you are told you can't have something that makes the attraction even more powerful.

A bit of a twist in having the Lycan gene transmitted by a human bite of a person who is already a Lycan and being bitten at a certain age. The story was also creative in the aspect of not having a the H/h not be the perfect Alpha shifters who were pre-destined for each other. The 2 main characters having "flaws" made them more likable in the story. An Alpha shifter that was suffering a mental breakdown from grief and depression, showing that even an Alpha isn't always perfect. Also that you don't have to be an Alpha female to be a critical asset to your pack. Cricket being the runt is the one considered to have the "defect", but she can hold her own and is more of an asset than many would like to admit.

This is the first time I have listened to Christine Padovan narrate an audio. She did a good job overall with the narration. Pleasant voice. Clearly spoken. Her female voices are really good of coarse. She also has some really good accents for her characters. But her male character voices could use a little work. She places to much emphasis on the last letter of a word or the last word in a sentence when doing her male character voices. It had an effect on the flow of the narration especially in the beginning of the story. As the story goes on the narration evens out and the emphasis isn't as noticeable. She was able to bring the characters and the story to life. This story would have been great with dual narration.

I seem to be the odd man out in regards to my overall enjoyment of the narration. And that's okay. Not every narrator is for everyone. There is a very popular narrator that people love and for me it's like nails on a chalk board. So this may be a case of it's me not you, regarding the narrator.

I love Cricket

I had read this book when it first came out so when I had the chance to listen to this book I jumped on it. I so love Cricket she maybe the lowest rank in werewolf society but she has the guts and attitude of a beta if not an alpha. Slade maybe a prince but he knows who he wants as a mate. The story is a serious but fun read. And covers lots of ground and gives a good lead into the series. Looking forward to listening to the Chernobyl Werewolf.

Interesting Story!

This story is a spin-off of the Alphas Pet Series, but I haven't listened to this series yet. Slade is a great Paranormal Wolf Shifters Story, with a great world building. The storyline is fast-paced, suspenseful, with action packed, twists and turns, and mystery. Cricket and Slade share an undeniable and hot chemistry. The other characters are also interesting. Cristine Padovan did a good narration.

love the book

Amazing book! Eva has thought of every detail from the werewolf social hierarchy to the action packed suspense and investigation. There's in depth character development and a well written story line. I also enjoyed the world building such as the intricacies of lichen society and history tie-ins. Fantastic start to a series.

I thought the narration started out robotic. But once Christine got to acting with different voices and with different accents, I thought it was great She really helped with envisioning the characters and the story.

great book

When book 1 of a series has you glued to the words and don't let go, you hopethe whole Series will be absolutely great!
Cricket a tiny werewolf, who out of 99.9%of runs don't live through the change but not Cricket. She was a fighter. Being a runt meant she could pass off as a human , was one reason she worked undercover at the special ops at the LIA (Lycan Intelligent Agency).
Alpha Prince Slade a royal whos family was all slaughtered is looking for revenge, can't seem to stop his rages. The LIA drugged him, transported him put then him in lock room which make things worse.
The only thing that calmed the white beast was a little runt.
You want to know more......get the book or better buy the audiobook and find out.

The only thing that troubled me was the narrator Christine Padovan her voice tried to hard and was slightly irrational. (sorry)
As far as I am concerned this is a must buy book.
I was gifted this ARC in audio form, for an honest and truthful review

Cute and sassy heroine, and an original plot.

The female lead in this book made me laugh with her sassy spunky attitude. The plot was not at all like any other pnr stories I have read it listened to. At first I didn't like the reader, but when I took into consideration the character she was portraying, I realized that she was actually perfect for the part. This was a thoroughly enjoyable story.
