Publisher's summary

Runt, Cricket, is an honorary beta of Team Greywolf, an elite special ops branch of the Lycan Intelligence Agency. As a member, she poses as a human and collects forensic evidence. Because of her low rank, she is assigned in the rehabilitation of Prince Slade suffering from morphogenesis after his entire pack is murdered, and then his indoctrination as a member of their team. Babysit a psycho, domineering alpha? Not on her watch. To complicate matters, she lusts for Slade. Foolish. A runt can never take an alpha as a mate.

Slade has two choices. Honor his murdered kin and serve Team Greywolf, or once healed, obey King Conan and return to his territory with an alpha mate. Complicating his decision is his relentless desire for the hot sexy little she-wolf, Cricket.

Early into his recovery, Slade and Cricket are sent to investigate missing werewolves. An unstable werewolf seems hardly a match for a former Nazi werewolf bent on bringing on Ragnarok, the destruction of mankind.

Can they stop this evil regime, while conforming to pack law that forbids any chance of them fulfilling their desire for each other?

Critic reviews

" Slade is book one of Ms. Gordon's offshoot of her Alpha Wolf's Pet, taking us back to that world with the emphasis on the L.I.A. One of the best parts of this is we get to see what has been happening to Dominic and Mia from Alpha Wolf's Pet, as well as other characters who return in this new offering. Slade, as her others have done, offers sweet and steamy romance, action of all kinds, good guys, bad guys and some you just aren't sure where they stand but each fits perfectly into this world. I can't wait to get my hands on book two!" (Annetta Sweetko, Fresh Fiction)

I LOVE A FORBIDDEN LOVE STORY

Any additional comments?

I was provided this audiobook through Audiobook Boom at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

A super start to a series. Likable characters and an interesting hierarchy in the shifter world make this story absorbing. Slade is the perfect Alpha male and Cricket, well, she's a freaking adorable spitfire. The two of them will rock the foundations of the societies pecking order, no doubt.

Christine Padovan did an excellent job but I need to hear a real man's voice to make it a score of 5.

Two Thumbs Up for this new series!

Sweet and Steamy

I really loved this book it had dynamic characters, a great storyline, and a fantastic plot. Every single character in this book had their own story and personalities which I found to be very enjoyable. The main characters' complex, sweet love story through all the dangers of being in Team Graywolf was really interesting and I found myself sucked in from the very first page of the book.

Cricket's sassy personality when she was in the presence of authority figures was very refreshing and funny, especially because with her low social standing as a runt she completely broke the social norm of being a complacent submissive in a multitude of ways.

Prince Slade's possessive nature paired with his protectiveness and loyalty to his companion as well as the basic rules of the pack I found to be endearing as well as intense in some situations as he struggled with the reality of falling for Cricket.

I really loved this book. It had the perfect combination of action, intensity, sexiness, and romance. I'm really looking foward to listening/ reading more from this author and from the Team Greywolf series.

Awesome couldn't stop listening

Cricket, a runt, works with Team Greywolf passing as a human and collecting evidence. But because of her low rank she is also chosen to help look after Prince Slade who is suffering after his entire pack was murdered. Cricket doesn't want to babysit Slade but finds herself falling for him which is bad as a runt and a alpha can never be together. Complicating things more they are sent together on a mission to investigate missing werewolves and that is where things go very wrong.

This is a fast moving, exciting, action packed, twisting and turning, edge of your seat kind of book, so be prepared. Slade and Cricket will keep you on your toes and waiting for more after each and every chapter and if you are lucky enough to have the audiobook narrated by Christine Padovan, well than you will know what it is like because she transports you right into their world, you are always right there with Slade and Cricket crying and cheering them on. Ms. Padovan does such a awesome job, one not to be missed.

Thrilling

Slade and Cricket, this book was like listening to an episode of CSI Miami. I was captivated, drawn in and the ease in which the story flowed was brilliant. I listened to this book on my way to work and was upset that I had to put it down. Cricket she is some kick ..s . I loved Slade oh my gosh, this is justna preference for me but I wish the narrator was male as I kept trying to her Slade's voice but apart from that I was sorry to see the book end. Yes it had to end but I enjoyed it so much, the ups and down, trials, joy, insecurities.

Some real wolfish behavior!

They’re both werewolves, but they come from worlds apart. Cricket is technically a Runt in the werewolf hierarchy, but her competence and ability to blend in as human has granted her honorary Beta status in the American Lycan Intelligence Agency in Team Greywolf. Slade comes from a long line of werewolf royalty where long-held rules of mate choosing are strictly adhered to. Recently, he lost his entire pack and madness threatens to consume him utterly. It’s hoped that Cricket’s Runt status will serve to bring out his Alpha protectiveness and ground him once again. Cricket isn’t too enthused about the assignment even as her libido lusts after the well-muscled Slade.

I’ve been wetting my feet on paranormal shifter romances this past year. I find some parts of this genre to be fascinating (like the shape-shifting) and other parts to be a bit over-pronounced (the damaged Alpha male). I found this book to be a better story than most I have encountered in this genre. It was Cricket. She made the story for me. I found her wit and sense of purpose and self to be refreshing and totally entertaining. She has a career and a place in Team Greywolf that she earned. Her status isn’t dependent upon the man in her life (another theme in shifter romances that has worn thin for me). I often chuckled at her sarcastic jokes. I think I could be best buds with her.

The damaged Slade was not much more than that. He has his royalty thing going, being a rich man in his own right and then his damaged psyche that needs healing. I could have used something more to give him personality. The lusty scenes between him and Cricket were good if a little brief. Perhaps that’s just my lustful hormones wanting more…

I did enjoy the big mystery to the story. Something is taking out werewolves, like Slade’s pack, and the Lycan Intelligence Agency is at a loss to explain it. One tiny lead gives us another and then Cricket and Slade have to go undercover and on the hunt. The action picks up and there’s one rescue after another. It was fun if a little predictable.

As a biologist, I also liked the few realistic touches about wolf hierarchy, such as all the sniffing, the nose nipping, and other such things. These details made the shape shifting, and especially the wolf form, more realistic and the other all story more entertaining.

At the end, not everyone gets everything they wanted, which I also liked. I don’t need everything to turn out totally happy hunky dory in my shifter romances. A few complications were left for the characters to work out.

I received a free copy of this book.

The Narration: Christine Padovan was great as Cricket. She has Cricket’s sarcasm down to a T. Padovan does tend to drop the last word in a sentence and draw it out, giving her speech an odd cadence that I can’t place. However, she doesn’t do this often when she’s doing a character’s lines. She does do it often when telling the story narrative and I feel it takes a little getting used to. Don’t be put off by it though as her character voices are worthy.

Cool Story

If you could sum up Slade in three words, what would they be?

Strong, enigmatic, caring

What did you like best about this story?

That Cricket and Slade were strong enough to stand up to the counsel and love each other.

What about Christine Padovan’s performance did you like?

She made the story come to life. I loved the way you could feel the emotions as she narrated the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No

Any additional comments?

I got this book via audiobook boom. The story was developed well and even though it appeared to be a continuation of another story it was a good standalone listen. The only issue I have is that a cliffhanger was at the end. I hate those. Especially when the next book is not ready to be read so you can finish the story.

A Unique Action Packed Shifter World!

My first Eva Grodan story, and I thought she did a great job on the world building, characters, and pack politics. Cricket may be a runt, the smallest in the pack, but I loved she had a backbone, and spunk. The relationship between her and Slade (the alpha) may have been forbidden but it was filled lot's of steamy chemistry, and hot sex scenes. Their relationship also reminded me of Ying and Yang, she calmed him, and brought a balance to their relationship.

The plot moves at fast paced, and there is a good mix of action, suspense and steamy romance. A great listen for shifter PNR fans. Christine did a great job with the narration. I liked both her female and male characters. I received this audio in exchange for an honest review, but do think this is a great whispersync deal.

Adventurous shifter romance with a hint of naughty

Take one against-all-odds determined female wolf shifter. Add one soul shattered royal prince, also a wolf shifter. Put them in a society carefully monitored by strict rules that would never allow them to be together. Then challenge those rules by throwing them into an adventure that may result in the annihilation of the human race.

This book is the result.

Cricket has spent a lifetime defying the rules and surviving against the odds. She finds herself in the challenging position of being the "calm" to Prince Slade's storm. Only she seems to be able to bring him back from the edge. While their society rules will allow them to be pack, for her to submit to her alpha, it will never allow for them to explore their undeniable chemistry. Luckily Cricket isn't one to submit and follow the rules and circumstances puts them on more equal footing.

The story is a little tense but a lot of fun. There are character links to the Alpha Wolf's Pet series. Eva Gordon has created a very interesting (and expanding) shifter world and even more interesting characters. The series promises to be entertaining and I am looking forward to more!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Enjoyable

I found this book enjoyable but felt there was something missing. I’m not sure if it was how long it took for this couple to admit they were meant for each other. Excellent performance from Christine.

A good overall story...

If I'm honest, I very nearly stopped this book at the third chapter. I struggled with the narrators character voices and felt a little cringe at times with some of the writing. But I powered through and actually enjoyed the story in the end. Enough so, that I actually want to know more about the other characters...
