Publisher's summary

Skylight Confessions: A Novel: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience! *

On the night her father dies, Arlyn - a dreamy believer in destiny and love - is certain the man she is meant to be with will walk into her life. But fate seems to be playing a trick when cool, practical, and deliberate John Moody knocks on her door to ask for directions. Their difficult marriage leads them and their children to a house made of glass in the Connecticut countryside, to the avenues of Manhattan, and to the blue waters of Long Island Sound, all in a search for family and identity.

Walking this path of ruin and redemption are Sam, the brilliant artist who is drawn to self-destruction and dreams; Blanca, the beautiful loner who lives in a world of books; and Will, the grandson, who is left a legacy of broken pieces he needs to put together. Here is a family so real, so tragic, so devoted, it is as if they have written their own riveting history - a quest for love and truth. Skylight Confessions is a luminous and elegant work of true originality.

*Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Critic reviews

"Hoffman is one of our great storytellers and one who knows the American family in all its many facets. In Skylight Confessions, she has once again written a story and characters that are truly unforgettable. A novel to be savored." (Victoria A. Brownworth, Baltimore Sun)

"Among the many pleasures of Skylight Confessions is a sense of continuous corner-turning, a chain of surprises.... Skylight Confessions is about the unresolvable contradictions that lie at the heart of life." (Ann Harleman, Boston Globe)

"Haunting.... This isn't just Hoffman's best recent novel; it's one of the best of a distinguished list.... Long after the last page is turned, the characters and their stories are impossible to forget." (Gail Pennington, St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

Amazing story in parts

The fascinating woman as the main character is woven throughout this book. The narrator is perfect for the tales of love and longing .

Great narration, horrible music throughout

I really love Alice Hoffman’s books and this one was really good. However, there was music throughout and it was so distracting.

Loved it! Very poignant.

Characters that touch your heart, this is a story that sticks with you - just like most of Ms. Hoffman's beautiful novels.

A window into the soul of a family

I don’t know what I was expecting, but for some reason this one caught me by surprise. I love Hoffman’s voice and storytelling, and Skylight Confessions did not disappoint. She paints the story of addiction with care and empathy, and the history of a marriage and what a family is with compassion. Mare Winningham’s narration is simply wonderful. She and Hoffman are a match made in heaven.

why the constant music? painful

i realized once the story started that i have already read this, years ago. but that wouldn't stop me from listening to the whole thing. however, the constant annoying music in the background will probably prevent me from completing the auidiobook. it is truly agonizing.

Brilliant Hoffman Tale, Lousy sound effects

The story is brilliantly magical and engaging, and the author's use of characterization and metaphor walk the reader right through the lives of her characters. However, while the performance is okay, the background music and sound effects seriously detract from the prose. Still worth a listen, but Ms. Hoffman, if you read this, please spare your other wonderful novels from such odd background cacophony.

hated the soundtrack

loved the book, always love Hoffman stories but absolutely hated an accompanying soundtrack in audible. the reader was very good but I had to give a bad mark on performance just because of the annoying background noise. very distracting! sometimes even louder than the narrative. not a good addition, I found it hard to get lost in the story, the soundtrack kept pulling me out

Horrible background music

a bittersweet story well narrated but whomever thought plinking background music played through the entire narration was a good idea was an idiot. It was so distracting, it was a struggle to finish. read the book instead of getting this narration.
