Publisher's summary

Chris Paul, "The Point God," a member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team and current point guard for the Phoenix Suns, narrates this compelling memoir. Deeply affected by the untimely death of his grandfather, Nathaniel "PaPa Chili" Jones, Paul recounts the inspiration and influence PaPa Chili continues to play in his life and career.

A powerful and unexpected memoir of family, faith, tragedy, and life's most important lessons.

The day after future NBA superstar Chris Paul signed his letter of intent to play college basketball for Wake Forest, he received a world-shattering phone call. His grandfather, Nathaniel "Papa" Jones, a pillar of the Winston-Salem community where he owned and operated the first Black-owned service station in North Carolina, was mugged and ultimately died from a heart attack resulting from the assault. His funeral filled the largest church in the county, which held over 1,000 people. He was 61 years old.

The day after burying his grandfather, Chris was coping the best way he knew how: by playing basketball for his high school team. After pouring in shot after shot, his last attempt was an airball purposely flung out of bounds from the foul line before Chris exited the game. The next day, local news headlines declared that he fell six points shy of the statewide single game high school scoring record. But he accomplished exactly what he set out to do: scoring 61 points, one for each year of life lived by his grandfather.

In Sixty-One, Chris opens up about life beyond basketball and the role his grandfather played in molding him into the man and father he is today. He’ll speak about the foundation of faith and family he built his life upon, what it means to be a positive light within your community and beyond, and the importance of setting the proper example for future generations. Most importantly, Chris will talk about his home, Winston-Salem, and the close-knit family and village that raised him to become one of the most respected leaders in all of sports.

Wow- Thank You Chris Paul and Papa

My grandfather was my best friend, dad and play mate rolled into one. He passed away 8 days before my 16th birthday and at 49 I still speak about Fred Keith Romel. He exuded love and he had the patience of The Holy Spirit.

I appreciate you speaking about your papa as mine was just as special and these stories are important. It also helped me to remember that I need to do better, I know he’s proud but I also know that I’ve lost my patience with my teens boys and I definitely can work on my tone etc. I am aware we model to our kids as that’s one reason they say yes ma’am and no sir.
Really living your Papa’s message meant a lot.

Your book was beautiful and I’ve heard you speak with Dax Shepard and that by far has been one of my favorite interviews. I too loved hearing you speak with The Pivot. You’ve reminded me that leading is not easy and you have to remember why you were chosen for the position.
Thank you for an amazing book. Your kids, Jada and your whole family are truly blessed.

Respectfully,

Melaina Gautier, from Austin, TX

Thank you

I personally am not a basketball fan, but heard an interview with Chris on Jay Shetty, I took a chance and used my credit for the month on this book. Chris Paul you did not disappoint. I cried, laughed and have been utterly inspired by this book. Thank you for sharing your story

Great book.

I loved how Chris used life examples to give perspective to how he’s been able to achieve the level of success that he has.

Red Benbow

I really enjoyed this book. Being born and raised in Winston Salem I remember hearing about his Paw Paw’s senseless murder. I didn’t really know the details about how it went down or how it affected this young king. Thx for being so honest in the writing of this book. I loved hearing your story. Thx for always representing Winston Salem and being a role model that the youth of our hometown can look up too. God bless !

So full right now…

A well done book, read by the original author, Chris Paul, himself. What a super bond he held with his grandfather, one which, including myself, will ever be experienced.
The struggles of African Americans, especially those of males, were truthfully told about. Will it ever end?!! Chris Paul, thank you for doing all you’re doing to enable the young and old to keep moving forward.

No clue what it was going to be about

And still enjoyed the gritty story. Good life lessons and inspiring. Certainly makes you think about situations and the consequences of actions.
