Story
Eddie Huang was finally happy. Sort of. He'd written a best-selling book and was the star of a TV show that took him to far-flung places around the globe. His New York City restaurant was humming, his OKCupid hand was strong, and he'd even hung fresh Ralph Lauren curtains to create the illusion of a bedroom in the tiny apartment he shared with his younger brother, Evan, who ran their restaurant business. Then he fell in love - and everything fell apart.

Story
Eddie Huang is the 30-year-old proprietor of Baohaus - the hot East Village hangout where foodies, stoners, and students come to stuff their faces with delicious Taiwanese street food late into the night - and one of the food world’s brightest and most controversial young stars. But before he created the perfect home for himself in a small patch of downtown New York, Eddie wandered the American wilderness looking for a place to call his own. Funny, raw, and moving, and told in an irrepressibly alive and original voice, Fresh Off the Boat recasts the immigrant’s story for the 21st century.

Story
As a young, unspectacular cook, David Chang opened a noodle restaurant in Manhattan’s East Village that should not have survived its first, misbegotten year. But, through sheer stubbornness and a series of utterly reckless choices, he became a chef who the New York Times once described as “the modern equivalent of Norman Mailer or Muhammad Ali”. In this memoir, Chang lays bare his self-doubt and ruminates on mental health.

Well, it wasn’t what I expected
For some reason, I was thinking this was going to be less slang-ridden. I mean, he has a similar style in prose to some famous US writers, but the story was a bit too dependent on texting technology to be easily comprehended via Audible. I think I’d enjoy this better as a document. The author’s performance did not help that sense. Unfortunately, Huang’s reading was too fast to appreciate the nuances. I thought about slowing it down from 1x to .75x just to see if it helped me enjoy it? Either way, I wish he had slowed down and given more significant pauses so the continuation didn’t just jam into each other but gave enough room to really audibly hear he had moved to the next section. The story was okay. I appreciated his apprehension regarding love and—oddly—the bit about performance anxiety when it really mattered was reasonable. But—again—it was rather entrenched in pop-vernacular and I wasn’t into it. I probably just need to re-read this on paper to better enjoy it.

Outdated Basketball references, awkward slang
Listened to this because I heard the couple broke up and thought it was weird the author wrote a book about their relationship. Turns out, it was weird! Filled with basketball references from the 1990s and other outdated slang that seems shoehorned into the story just to make the author seem cool, diatribes about his manhood functioning (and not functioning) as well as just an overview of his inability to emotionally connect with women. All in all, a creepy book to write about ones ex-girlfriend. Can't say I'm a big fan of his food, and now neither am I a big fan of his book. Glad it was free, wasn't worth a credit.

Unique, Engaging, and Insightful
Listened to it back to back on my drive back from Los Angeles as the school year ended. Read it again couple days later. Eddie has a unique voice and perspective yet speaks on the emotions and vulnerability that we all feel one way or another. A great addition to his previous longer works.

Decent story. Short though.
Bought this as I love Eddie, as soon as I seen it I copped. Shame I wasted a full credit on this book because it was only half an hour long. Wish if just paid for it instead 😔.

Why do I feel like I just listened to a new age rom com?
Listening to this was a surprisingly refreshing funny little journey. I bought this because it was short and the title made me smile and it was exactly that. A wonderfully succinct telling of a ‘how it happened love story’ that evokes all the same feelings as any rom com. I wanted to be Julie and I wanted to be Eddie but I got the best seat in the house as the friend sipping all the tea with none of the anxiety lol.

Surprisingly touching
Eddie is great. The story is great. Listen to it and be moved. I'm inspired to write my own love story, record it and get someone to sell it for me - I'm that inspired by Eddie. And you can virtually stalk the two protagonists on Instagram. On second thoughts, maybe I won't write, record and sell my own love story
