Publisher's Summary

Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monsters—this gothic epic fantasy will appeal to fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.

Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.

When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won’t do his reputation any favors. When he’s offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that’s plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice.

It’s one he’s certain he’ll regret.

But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he’s been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

Sooo Spicy!

This book had me sweating for a bit it's so spicy, but I found myself wondering when things were gonna move along. Great performance and a great story! Another banger by Rin Chupeco.

Flat romance takes away from good adventure story

I was excited for an adventure story with bi/pan representation, but I found that part of the story the most flat and disappointing.

The way the relationship unfolds feels weird and forced. We get very little sense for how Remy feels about Xiaodan or Zidane beyond minor indicacations or hints of physical attraction. It's borderline aromatic, which would be fine, except the characters are supposed to love each other?

It works slightly better once they're established as a throuple, but their attachment to each other still feels underdeveloped and unearned. We are told that the sex is good, but it's presented more as a montage of f***ing in the background, and we never get a real sense of the passion they supposedly feel or why it exists. There's only very limited descriptions of the characters' physical appearances or admiration thereof by the characters. Likewise with personal qualities that might be attractive. It seems like it's as simple as base attraction and Remy being capital G Good. Basically, it feels flat and unearned, and the author tells more than shows us that they're "in love."

Also, because it's so hard to be invested in the relationship for the reasons I've already mentioned, it takes away from the adventure story. And it's a really good adventure story, actually. I wanted to know what was gonna happen with the major threat they were facing, so it didn't feel good to be constantly reminded of their underdeveloped romance. Overall, it was okay I guess, but disappointing. Reading a book 2 will be low on my priority list.

Great Story and Great Narration

I did know what to expect when I read the blurb, but the story was better than I expected and the narrator elevated to a different level. If you love Vampire stories with gory and spice, then give this one a shot.

Another great book by Rin

I couldn't put it down. It was steamy, it was edge of your seat emotional, suspenseful, and full of twists. my only complaint was I didn't wait for the next book to be out before I read this one and now I have to wait a year. I hope Rin continues to write more at this level, it was really really good.

AGAIN!

How I loved this story!!!
I was struggling in the beginning but when the 3 set off together I couldn't stop listening!!! I usually don't like vampire books but the lore in this one and the dynamic between the 3 of them was just amazing! There better be another book Rin!

Very enjoyable!

As a fan of Castlevania, this book had exactly what left me wanting with the trio. I quite enjoyed the story overall. I was invested in every character over the course of the story. I heard it may be a duology and I'll be looking forward to the next book. hopefully it will be narrated by Matthew Spencer again.

This was an entertaining story.

I really enjoyed the story. I've read and enjoyed other works by Rin Chupeco. I appreciate the non-traditional relationship representation.
looking forward to the next volume so I can continue to follow the adventures of Remy, Xiaodin and Zidan!

HBO’s next hit!

Like Game of Thrones x True Blood! Sexy, political intrigue, sprinkled with Asian flavor. I can’t wait for the sequel!!!
