Story
The plane circled in the dark. Joe Pickett could just make out down below a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. And Joe knew that he might be their next target. The Cates family had always been a bad lot. Game warden Joe Pickett had been able to strike a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April had been endangered, but he'd always wondered if there'd be a day of reckoning.

Story
Everything about the man is a mystery: the massive ranch in the remote Black Hills of Wyoming that nobody ever visits, the women who live with him, the secret philanthropies, the private airstrip, the sudden disappearances. And especially the persistent rumors that the man’s wealth comes from killing people. Joe Pickett, still officially a game warden but now mostly a troubleshooter for the governor, is assigned to find out what the truth is, but he discovers a lot more than he’d bargained for. There are two other men living up at that ranch. One is a stone-cold killer who takes an instant dislike to Joe.

Story
Wyoming's new governor isn't sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes - these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and "ranch romances" aren't uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else.

But then things happen to make Joe wonder: Is Earl's death what it appears to be? Is Missy being set up? He has the county DA and sheriff on one side, his wife on the other, his estranged friend Nate on a lethal mission of his own, and some powerful interests breathing down his neck.

Publisher's Summary
From C. J. Box, the New York Times-bestselling author of the Joe Pickett novels, comes a thrilling book of suspense stories about the Wyoming he knows so well - and the dark deeds and impulses that can be found there.
Over the course of eighteen books, C. J. Box has been consistently hailed for his brilliant storytelling and extraordinary skills at creating character, suspense, and a deep sense of place. All of those strengths are in the ten riveting stories - three of them never before published - that make up Shots Fired.
In "One-Car Bridge," one of four Joe Pickett stories, Pickett goes up against a "just plain mean" landowner, with disastrous results, and in "Shots Fired," his investigation into the radio call referred to in the title nearly ends up being the last thing he ever does. In "Pirates of Yellowstone," two Eastern European tough guys find out what it means to be strangers in a strange land, and in "Le Sauvage Noble," the stranger is a Lakota in Paris who enjoys playing the "noble savage" for the French women - until he meets Sophie. Then he discovers what "savage" really means.

C.J. has done it again
An intriguing collection of short stories by C.J. Box, masterfully read by David Chandler. I particularly enjoyed the stories which contain Joe & Nate because I have read the entire Joe Pickett series and these could each be a chapter or two in one of the novels. However, each story stands alone so reading the series is not a prerequisite! The other stories clearly demonstrate C.J.'s imagination, writing style and 'dark side' in a couple. I liked the explanation of where he got some of his ideas and when and why he wrote each one.

CJ Box masterful in the short stories too
If you're a fan of CJ Box like I am, you must read everything that he writes. I'm generally not a fan of short stories, but every one of these is a winner. Especially appreciated the one that was a required 1000 words--no more and no less. Box's efficiency with just the right words made it interesting and complete.
There are also a few that were previously only released for e readers, and I know a few people who were disappointed in not being able to read these before. A couple revolve around Joe Picket and Nate. Also a very interesting one "Pronghorns of The Third Reich" that was written around an actual picture from history.
Great listening to them on Audible. David chandlers continues to do an excellent job narrating Box's works.

This Review Needs a Title
An excellent collection of short stories-- many of them centered around C.J. Box's main character Joe Pickett. Nate Romanowski is the main focus of “The Master Falconer” though Joe Pickett does make a brief appearance....my favorite story of the collection. Nate gets mad and he gets even. Other stories are fantastic, too.

That's odd...a THREE star review within 3 hours???
Any additional comments?
Not trying to harp on this ONCE again, but this trend of people POORLY rating audiobooks that came out less than 3 hours ago is RIDICULOUS! Not only is it UNFAIR & MISLEADING to the publishers, the Audible site, the author (likely trying to support themselves financially)...but MOST importantly, us the CONSUMERS.
I listen to around 4-5 audiobooks from Audible PER week, so I understand getting a DUD of an audiobook now and then. With Audible's No-Hassle Return Poiicy in effect, there is NO reason to poorly review a book based simply on first impressions, and that you have NOT completed (since cramming a 7+ hour audiobook into 2-3 hours is impossible last time I checked).
If you are like myself, the most IMPORTANT aspect of whether I use a hard earned credit on an audiobook, is BASED on the REVIEWS...There is a reason Audible's rating sytem is starred in 3 distinct areas; to allow a FULL and knowledged review of the ENTIRE production. There is NO star-rating category for anything like "first minute impressions" or "How good was the INTRO" lol. If you dont like the book after an hour, FINE. If you know the narrator isn't great early on, FINE. But don't come handing out ONE-STAR ratings in categories you HAVE ZERO ground to give out...you MIGHT be able to rate the "perfomance" but your creidbility to rate the Overall & Story categories is NULL in any case...because you did NOT finish the BOOK!
FYI - As to NOT be partial in my rating of this title, I will update and provide a FULL REVIEW once I have completed this title. But something had to be said about the unfair, early reviews posted for so many new books lately :)

A Fan Born in Wyoming
I am not certain how someone would react to some of these short stories if they were not already acquainted with C. J Box and his Joe Pickett series set in the Big Horn area of Wyoming. Certainly, knowing many of the characters and their backstories make the short stories richer. So if you are looking for guidance on whether or not to buy this book, my answer is twofold. If you are already a Joe Pickett fan then by all means, get the short stories. You will not be disappointed. If you have missed C. J. Box but are a fan of books set in the modern west, then consider the purchase. However do yourself a bigger favor and start the series in order. David Chandler does a fine job of narrating all of the C. J. Box novels and the characters will grow on you with each installment.
