A freak accident, his world torn apart....

Antonio Morris has it all, until an accident takes everything from him. Now disabled, this once alpha male is left with an uncertain future. Until she enters his life.

A fresh start....

Karina is finally living her dream directing movies, and she has her eye on Antonio as her new lead. She can see everything he can still be, even if he can’t see it himself. When Antonio flirts with her, she is flattered, but she is a professional, and she is definitely not his type.

Passion ignites, though, and Karina finds that she cannot resist this bad boy. Their steamy encounters soon heat up, and she finds herself in too deep.

Does their relationship have a future, or is it just mind-blowing sex?

Liked it

Liked the premise of the story. Two black folk in entertainment, one being an actor with a physical disability(his disability was that he had an arm amputee). The appeared to be somewhat rivals/enemies to lovers from the beginning and I liked how it progressed from that. It was steamy as the sexy times came, but there was just two issues I had that made it not a five.

While the disability rep is not seen as much in AA romance, I liked he was disabled, but he seemed like he wasn't written like he was more than his disability at times. I didn't expect him to be always happy all the time, but so much of him was trying to prove he was capable or that that's all audiences cared about when it came to his career, that he seemed like he was his disability instead of a sexy human being who just happened to also be disabled.

Also Karina wasn't a typical heroine. Most times she was described as hideous. I'm not sure I connected to it because I'm not comfortable seeing a Black woman being described that way. A plain Jane I would've stomached, because it's okay to be average, but I just didn't connect to it, because I prefer romances where even if the heroine isn't drop dead gorgeous, the hero sees her that way.

Romance is supposed to be escapism and if the world already naturally reviews black women on the bottom, I'm looking for fiction to fix or validate black women. Overall I still enjoyed and look forward to follow ups. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Black Love

I enjoyed the love /hate relationship between Antonio and Karina. I loved watching them overcome their physical shortcomings to open themselves up to love. They were both interesting & flawed characters, which made them more authentic. The story itself moved well. The plot was solid, formatted and written well.

What I didn't love was the mention of Karina's lack of physical beauty on every page. It was overdone. At one point I wanted to scream, "Hey! I got it! She looks like the abominable snowman or an albino gorilla. Move on!" Lastly, the narrator, while he did a great job in the He Got Me Series, he did not bring this particular story to life. I will be honest and say that I kept losing track because his voice was so soothing and without emotion.

What saved this audiobook was the love between Karina and Antonio. We should all be so lucky to find the one who loves us, flaws and all.

Story rating: 3.5 stars!

This author's work is new to me, so I wasn't sure what to expect or if the author would successfully deliver on the intriguing premise. I was caught up in the tension between the two main characters Karina and Antonio from beginning to end. Their working relationship as film industry professionals created an interesting dynamic between them because they both had something to lose if the Karina couldn't convince Antonio to finish filming the most critical scene in the movie. At risk for them were their reputations and punitive financial damages. I was wowed by what Karina did to make Antonio comfortable enough to finish that important scene. I paused and pondered if any director (male or female) in Real Life would go to that extreme length. It was truly impressive, and hands-down my favorite scene in the novel. Ultimately, the film got finished and competed for several Emmy awards.

One thing that really bothered me was the negative language used to describe Karina over and over. This never changed even after Antonio realized he was falling in love with her. So for me, this made the story less romantic. Even so, I enjoyed how their working relationship eventually evolved into a personal one. The epilogue covered a lot of future time in their lives which I enjoyed except for the ultimate fate of one of the main characters. To me, that future lacked a true happily ever after ending which meant a guaranteed lower rating from me.

Performance rating: 3 stars!

Narrator Shaeffer Hughes was also new to me. He has a pleasant narrating voice, but his vocal style was often a bit too stilted. I think he has the potential to be a better narrator if he could smooth out his speaking rhythm more.

Overall rating: 4 stars!

Typically, the Hollywood or celebrity trope rarely piques my interest. For once though, I was genuinely fascinated by this one. I loved that Karina was such a strong female and that she made no apologies for not being a traditional beauty working in Hollywood while breaking barriers in the film industry. She was just a normal woman who wanted to tell stories via the film medium. And, I also appreciated Antonio's personal struggle and growth. He had to overcome a physical change to his appearance that made him go from a handsome playboy actor who was no longer whole-body capable to an actor with new layers thanks to Karina's encouragement. I liked that he also decided to add producing to his professional arsenal as well.

Their happy for a time romance was quite unique to me, hence the 4 stars!

Happy and sad tears

So many emotions after listening to this. I liked that Antonio wasn't perfect (arm amputee) and Karina wasn't a beauty. Love is more than surfaces and superficials. Both characters had substance and developed deep chemistry. I enjoyed their journey and am still weeping at the ending. This was my first time reading this author and I definitely want more of his work even though he broke me. The narrator brought it all to life for me. I highly recommend this.

Steamy, love story

Antonio, an actor, feeling sorry for himself afetr an accident left his arm amputed. He went into seclusion thinking his acting career is over. Karina , a director, familiar with his acting potential ,offers Antonio a role of a lifetime. Both have their insecurities. The relationship deveopes slowly. it is built on self confidence, trust and love between them. The narrator, Shaeffer Hughes, was excellent in his nardation of this story. I recevied a free code in exchane for an honest review.

Fantastic

Loved what the author did with the character buildup. Fantastic start. The Narrator did a great job of bringing the world and characters to life. Will have to read the rest. I was given a free copy of the audio in return for an unbiased review.

Great audiobook in it's genre.

I enjoyed this audiobook. There are very few audiobooks of any genre that are specifically revolving around black people. Although I am not black myself, I fully enjoyed this book. The story had a great move along then slow down followed by move along tempo. I recommend this audiobook. Now for the obligatory: "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

Perfect ending

This was the perfect ending for the She got me series. It was a hot and steamy sexy story. I was glad this story had a little more length for development to this story. This was better narrated then some of the others. This was the best one of the series.
