Publisher's Summary
Evil is closer than you think...
Psychologist Mollie Roark had it all. A hotshot husband, a beautiful daughter, a successful career, and a fancy house on the Napa hillside. She'd finally made it. Left her troubled past and her crazy father far behind her.
But two years ago, the unspeakable happened. Her daughter's burned body turned up on the shores of Lake Berryessa, just days after her 15th birthday. The police seem certain Dakota fell victim to the Shadow Man, the prolific serial killer who had terrorized the Napa Valley for two decades. Mollie's normal life is now anything but. Childless, divorced, and unemployed, she's barely staying afloat. She's got one mission: to find the scumbag who killed her daughter and make him pay.
When a mysterious old man shows up at her door seeking absolution and promising answers, it's impossible to resist. But the deeper she goes inside his mind, the shakier her sanity becomes. Everyone is a suspect. No one is innocent. Because, Mollie knows evil may be as close as her own shadow.
Straight from the mind of a forensic psychologist comes an addictive new series of betrayal, lust, revenge, and murder. These doctors earned their degrees from the dark side. And once you start listening, you won't be able to stop. Like all the books in the Doctors of Darkness series, Shadows Among Us can be listened to as a stand-alone.

When Evil is just outside your door ...
Like every parent, Mollie Roark tried to keep her daughter safe from the evil that lurks just outside her front door. Like most parents, Mollie took her protection to the extreme fostering resentment and anger. Then the unspeakable happens and now Mollie is searching for the Shadow Man that killed her daughter and left her burnt body as a reminder. Mollie has lost everything – her marriage, job, security, home, and her daughter. Hell-bent on revenge; Mollie turns over every stone – the elusive Shadow Man will pay for his crimes.
Ellery Kane, the author, builds the suspense of the Shadow Man and the many heartbreaking discoveries that Mollie unearths in her search. Kane tells the one story all parents dread – losing their child and finding out they were partly responsible by driving them to the secrecy of their actions that eventually result in their death. She tells the story in a sensitive yet poignant style that elicits the heartfelt hurt and dread that one would expect to feel. We get glimpses into the Shadow Man and it is frightening!
Kane is deliberate in her character-building and scene-setting. The dialog is realistic and thorough. This is one of those rare audiobooks that once you start listening, you cannot stop. You get caught up in the story and the details.
Kristin James, the narrator, is highly skilled at making subtle changes to her voice and tone thus providing distinctive voices that allow the listener to visually see each character and keep the story flowing smoothly. Her pace of speaking is punctuated appropriately with a variety of emotions – fear, loathing, love, sadness, etc. I thoroughly enjoy listening to James perform.
Overall, this is an excellent book that engages the listener on different levels. One cannot casually listen to this book as it is one of those rare books that will keep you up until you reach the end of the book.
There were no issues with the quality or the production of this audiobook. Everything was clear and well done.

I'm rewriting my review. This does start slowly but it will keep you
listening, the mystery building as time passes. Then when it does pop you will be well versed in the characters
involved and you will - still not knowing what's really going on - hang on until the dust settles. A good thriller. Whew!

Tense and a little Dark
Shadows among Us
I struggled to get into the world of the book. But with a little bit of persistence it becomes a pretty intriguing and darkplot.
Starting book 4 in a series means that maybe I am missing something from previous books, but it worked as a stand alone novel, I am confident that the rest of the series will be amazing.
If this is your genre then I highly recommend this audio book as the starting point for an epic dark thriller.

A gripping psychological thriller
Psychologist Mollie Roark used to have it all, but when her 15-year-old daughter Dakota is found murdered, she loses everything in her quest to get revenge,
This was a fascinating book with dark secrets and terrible truths. It goes through the present timeline, where Dakota is dead and Mollie is on a mission to find out the truth, as well as the past where Dakota was still alive and how she came to die. Throughout the story you learn terrible truths about the so called “perfect” family as well as Dakota’s investigations into the shadowman. It was interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat. I was drawn in and couldn’t wait to see how the story unfolds.
Kristin narrated very well with excellent intonation and energy in her performance. She made me feel the emotions I was hearing and kept me entertained throughout the performance.
I definitely recommend this book; it is exciting and I cannot wait to hear more from the author!
