Publisher's Summary

Nothing stays black and white in a world full of shadows....

I’m Alana Mitchell, and for my 20th birthday, I got a brand-new magical destiny instead of the laptop I was saving for. I’m a witch. I have powers I can’t control, enemies I know nothing about, and a legacy I can’t begin to grasp.

There’s a shadow world out there, waiting to swallow me whole...a world I didn’t even know existed until I used my magic and unleashed hell upon my naïve self. From heart-eating ghouls to glamors, potions, and spells, nothing is as it seems.

A renegade demon and his brother are teaching me the ropes and driving me crazy with their "I-know-better" attitudes, beckoning stares, and stupidly handsome faces.

At this rate, I’ll flunk Witchcraft 101. I want to hunt down the bastards that destroyed my future, but the brothers’ past is threatening to steal my soul and tear me apart - literally.

To survive, I must embrace the darkness simmering inside me and unleash the devil within, no matter the consequences.

Bloody Hearts

My first time listening to a book by this Anya. The story was well written and easy to follow. Kelsey Navarro was easy to listen to and brought the characters to life. I throughly enjoyed this story and cannot wait to get the next in the series.

Annoying main character and uneven pace

This is the first novel in the Bloody Hearts series of new adult urban fantasy/paranormal romance by Anya J. Cosgrove.

I liked the premise of this book, but the pacing was off. The story got off to an exciting start, with our main character Alana being followed and then kidnapped, revealing the existence of the supernatural. I wanted to learn about these characters and their abilities, but the plot just stalled out. The excitement picked up again toward the end, and I found the ending of the book intriguing.

The main character, college student Alana, is immature, self-centered, petulant, and hard to like. Unfortunately, most of the story is told from her perspective. Thom seemed remarkably bland and lacked chemistry with Alana, which makes the love triangle plot feel flat. Liam was interesting, but we don’t get to know him nearly as well as I would have liked.

I’m sufficiently curious about where the story is going that I might check out the next book.

I enjoyed the narration by Kelsey Navarro. Her performance was well paced and easy to understand, and I enjoyed the character voices. I think this is a good choice for listening if you don't mind the slow progress in the middle.

I was provided a free review copy of this audiobook by the author; I volunteered to provide an honest review.

Demons are the new Vamps~!

I am in awe at the creative liberties Anya Cosgrove has taken to expertly tell her New Adult story of paranormal romantic suspense! For those familiar with the late 90s television show "Charmed," the first season was dark, and untainted by society's desire to "Disneyfy" everything. "Shadow Walker" borrows a page from that spellbook: newly awakened, untrained young witches are being targeted and kidnapped by the demon collective. You see, nothing is more intoxicating to a demon than the blood of a witch. The stronger the witch's bloodline, the potent the high.

The story starts off with twenty-year old Alana's rude introduction to her magical birthright. She may not have asked for it, but the results are all the same; her life and those she cares most for are now in danger. Fortunately for her, a demonic shadow walker and his brother end up rescuing her from a terrible fate. All she had to do was spill a little blood (so he can get drunk off of her power) and agree to their rules to keep everyone safe.

I absolutely reveled in the chapters with Liam's point of view! He is what Damon Salvatore was to the Vampire Diaries. Yet I had to dock one star off because of the annoying "heroine" and her damsel in distress denial syndrome. The narration was fine, except I had trouble distinguishing her voice for Liam from Alana's. A few minor technical gripes include: 1) Alana or Lana, which is it?, 2) Ch. 22 -- sealed my "faith" vs. "fate", and 3) Ch. 23 -- it's pronounced GIF not JIF! *I was given a free copy of this audiobook and these opinions are strictly mine.*

I love this series!!

Alana thought she was human and unassuming. In an emergency her powers activate and it was a beacon to demons. Alana is hard headed, childish and selfish. Her college crush, Thom, and his brother, Liam, saved her and are trying to teach her how to protect herself and get a handle on her powers. Thom is sweet and thoughtful. Liam is a demon fighting against the "Collective". Liam is my favorite character and I have been thinking about this book for two years now. This is one series that I LOVED and will go back to time and time again. If you like witches, magic, demons and lots of danger, this is a series to enjoy.

Cosgrove and Navarro kept me invested ...

Navarro proved her versatility. Shadow Walker is not my normal type of read. Paranormal is not my genre of choice, but somehow both author and narrator made it work. Alana's journey from teen angst to adult shadow hunter is a captivating transformation. From dangerous enemies to possible romance and let's not forget the learning curve along the way, Cosgrove and Navarro kept me invested and that is a tough task.

Cool premise, fun ideas, and demons!

Audio review; listened on Audible. Narrator did a good job. She fit the feel of the story for me. Recommend listening!

The premise is cool and the story gets right into the action. Love books with demons and such! Alana finds out she has some magical abilities; this puts her on the radar of some big baddies because her blood draws them in. Luckily, she’s rescued by brothers, Liam and Thom, but she needs to go away to protect her family. She ends up staying with the brothers while she learns about her powers and this new world she finds herself a part of. Alana has a crush on Thom, but the more she gets to know Liam, he too catches her eye. Liam gets some chapters in his POV; he is dealing with a lot. Alana and Liam do not get off on the right foot, but the passion is there. Alana and Thom are sweet; he’s such a nice guy, but I need more from him. More intensity. I like Alana’s sass, but she did disappoint me with her games. She’s the type that becomes a brat and lashes out when she’s hurt emotionally. I was hoping for a bit more maturity with them all being in their 20’s, but I did appreciate Alana at least trying to not be a damsel; she has a lot of room for growth. Lots of interesting ideas in this book; entertaining and fun! Excited to see where the story goes!

A walk in the shadows

This was an awesome read/listen. I liked the love triangle because she never really made out with both guys and also, we have one who’s a bad boy, Liam, and he seems to be crazy about her deep down. But he acts like he hates her and she totally does him. Yet he makes her burn for him. I so want her and him together. The other brother, Tom, is good and all that Liam isn’t. He is Alana’s boyfriend. Yet somehow it doesn’t feel like he’s as crazy about her as the other guy.

It was great watching Alana learn what she is and how to become more into her being. I can’t wait to read the next book. I wonder what mysteries will be revealed. I also want to see how her relationship goes.

The narrator did a great job, although the male character voices had to grow on me. Didn’t take long though.

Interesting story line

When Alana turns 20 she's shocked to learn she's a witch, uncontrollable powers & all. As she's trying to learn to deal with her new life, she meets 2 brothers who are protectors of witches. They are trying to help her survive in her new world. It's not easy, but she's determined to learn what she can from the brothers.

This is the first book I've read/listened to from this author. I thought it was a good story with lots of twists. The love triangle between her & the brothers is different in the sense that she's not totally attracted to one of the brothers, but just something she wants. Interesting story line. I will pick up book 2.

Great Listen!

This was a slow start but got better as the story went on. Alana was immature and annoying at times, but did not take away from the story. Would like to continue with this series after the cliffhanger ending Anya J. Cosgrove left us with. The Kelsey Navarro did a wonderful job at bring the story a live.

Slow burn is right! But plot twists worth the wait.

Slow at the start with all those months holed up, but then it moves quickly with lots of twists and turns in the plot.

Female lead quite immature, ( she is 20) lots of opportunities to shed light on her dreams but never speaks of it, frustrating!

Enjoyable and I do recommend, you just have to be patient. Come on Liam and Alana! or Alana and both the brothers!

Engaging debut in a promising series

To survive, I must embrace the darkness simmering inside me and unleash the devil within, no matter the consequences…

Just as she comes into her powers on her 20th birthday, Alana is kidnapped by demons known as Shadow Walkers and is rescued by Thom and his half demon brother Liam. They take her to a safe house where she learns that not only is she a witch but that she can’t go home until she has learned to deactivate the beacon that witches give off allowing demons to track them. Not wanting to put her family in danger, she reluctantly agrees.

As Alana tries to access her new powers and control them before the Shadow Walkers track her down, she begins to feel an overwhelming attraction for both brothers that threatens to drive a wedge between them. As details of their pasts emerge, however, certain truths about Alana’s capabilities come to light..

Shadow Walker is the first instalment of the Bloody Hearts series. I was impressed by the authors world building and her unique take on witches and demons. Unfortunately I found myself struggling to like the female protagonist who often came across as petulant, a trait which seemed more pronounced due to the Kelsey Navarro’s narration. Liam on the other hand was an interesting character who I couldn’t help sympathising with. His struggle to control his demon side as well as his feelings for Alana made for compelling reading. It helped that the author included his point of view as well as Alana’s. While Thom is your typical down to earth, amiable guy, Liam is the complete opposite. Brooding, conflicted with just a hint of danger about him. What’s not to like? 😉;)

All in all this was a well paced, engaging introduction in what looks to be an entertaining series. Recommended for fans of paranormal romance, witches, demons, shifters and love triangles.

I received an advanced free audible copy of Shadow Walker which was narrated by Kelsey Navarro. While I was impressed by the way her tone changed for the male characters, her narration for the main female character did grate on me at times.

Shadow walker

The is a slow burn romance which I love. I liked the secondary characters not so much the main character. I found her to be really annoying.
The story ends on a cliffhanger
I would read the next book.

Loved it!

Thank you to the author for allowing me a free copy of the audiobook. I am so exited for the next one! This book is a paranormal romance that follows the story of our main character Alana and her discovery of her true powers. It does have adult scenes within and some gory parts but for me this was no issue.

When a frightful event activates her powers she is no longer safe in the comforts of her human life. She is now a target for demons who are thirsty for her blood. This is when we are introduced to Liam, a demon who could be the cause of her death if he can not control his thirst for her blood. Along with Liam, his sweet brother Thom (Alana's crush.) We follow the trio and their friend Lilah and their journey to protect Alana from the dark forces at work.

The book was truly unputdownable (if that is even considered to be a word) and the audiobook is just as good. the voice actress did the book justice well done!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Vampire Diaries.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I need me some more Alana and Liam and am hoping they end up together in future books.
I loved this book from the start and it’s one of the few I would listen too again.

My new 'go-to' audiobook !

This is a five star experience...

The story, expressive description and the dynamics of our 4 main characters made me curious and kept me engaged throughout. There was action, tension, angst, attraction - and what made this so special was the way the story was weaving it all together. Gently building it up over the course of the story.

The narrator's approach is wonderful. A relaxing, dynamic voice. Believable. I do hope book 2 will continue with Kelsey. Its my new go-to audiobook for taking time out to enjoy a quiet moment with a great audiobook. I will definitely purchase number 2.
