Publisher's Summary

The gods are dying. But for one man, death is only the beginning.

Murdered as a ritual sacrifice, amateur thief and professional charmer Dustin Graves mysteriously survives, finding himself gifted with strange, dark magic. Then more dead bodies turn up. Some are human, but one is a god of the old world, slain at his own doorstep.

Mortal or divine, the bloodshed must end, and Dust is the mage for the job. But first he must contend with a succubus, a talking sword, a spider queen, a goddess of magic, and eldritch abominations from beyond the stars. No big deal...right?

If you like snarky heroes, snappy dialogue, and a bit of grit and gore, you'll love the first standalone audiobook in Nazri Noor's series of urban fantasy novels. Explore the Darkling Mage universe and discover a taste of Shadow Magic today.

A new fantasy world and series to fall into

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

With that done, this is a great book. The narrator hits it out of the park with the voices, enough variance in tone and cadence with the characters to make them a great listen. The story, while treading in familiar water, swims in a different way. A touch of battle magic, a hint of spying, a dash of awkward main character and amusing side characters makes a great book. If you're looking for something new, in the fantasy/hidden magic world sort of setting this will scratch that itch.

Excellent Start for a New Series

I had no expectations going into this book. I had not herd of it before, and had not read any reviews. I also did not read the prequel, Penumbra. The tone and pacing of the story are both well done. The magic system is different. The plot is interesting, and the story was great. The narrator, Luke Daniels, did an excellent job with the voices, tone, and pacing. Overall it was a great experience and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Great story, great characters, interesting world.

I don't know if my expectations were just low going in but man what a great book this was. Story starts off at a fast pace. Love the main guy (though a bit frustrating how dim witted he can be at times). And of course Luke Daniels kills it without fail. You can't beat him.

Very well done

Great start to a new series. Hesitated when I first saw it but was very much proved wrong. The MC is very well done and proves to be someone capable of carrying the story forward. Luke Daniels does a fantastic job of bringing this world to life. I received a free copy of this audio in exchange for an unbiased review.

Good Start To A Series

I really liked the main character Dustin. He has a sense of humor and quick wit to back it up. The story has a fresh take on magical powers and the supernatural. The ending was extremely enjoyable and had a grand battle to boot. The Narration is spot on for conveying the tone of the story. I am looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.

Solid start to a new urban fantasty series.

Shadow Magic is the first book in the Darkling Mage series, a new urban fantasy series (At least new to me) and it's a blast. Like many UF books, the main character is a bit on the snarky side, which is exactly how I like it. Solid story with plenty of action, and I really enjoyed the magical world Nazri Noor created. Dustin Graves (our almost unwilling hero) has some unique powers and I look forward to checking out more of his adventures in the future.

Luke Daniels is one of my favorite narrators and as always he doesn't disappoint. He delivers his usual spectacular narration, bringing the world and its inhabitants to life. I'd seriously listen to this guy narrate a phone book.

Entertaining premise with fantastic characters

This was really good! When I first saw this book, I had a feeling that it was my kind of story. Then I saw that the narrator was Luke Daniels and I had to give this book a try. Once I started listening to the book, I didn't want to stop and was very eager to see how things would work out. I am so glad that I decided to give this book a try.

Dustin is a Hound for an organization. He has a pretty handy ability in that he is able to shadow walk, which means he can step from one shadowy space to another. He also has already died once. This book had a whole lot going for it from the very beginning. I thought that the main character, Dustin, was incredibly interesting and wanted to know more about what he could do and how he had apparently died before even though he seemed to be very much alive.

Dustin works for the Lorica which was also a very interesting group filled with a variety of unique characters. There is plenty of things going on to keep Dustin and his co-workers busy and before long Dustin finds himself in danger. This book was exciting from the start and I loved the fact that I never knew what might happen next because really anything seemed possible.

Luke Daniels does a fantastic job with the narration. The story is told from Dustin's point of view and I thought that he was able to bring Dustin to life. I really liked Dustin's sense of humor and I thought that the performance made it even more enjoyable. I liked the variety of voices used in this story and thought that everything flowed very nicely.

I would recommend this series to others. This is a very solid start to a promising urban fantasy series. I really liked the characters and found the story to be exciting. I wouldn't hesitate to read more of this series in the future.

I received a review copy of this book from the author via Audiobook Boom.

Magical Beginning

This story kept my attention from start to finish. I enjoyed the magical elements as well as the mythical God's placed through out. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more in this series
