Based on a groundbreaking in-depth survey of 22,000 Christian women, The Great Sex Rescue unlocks the secrets to what makes some marriages red hot while others fizzle out. Generations of women have grown up with messages about sex that make them feel dirty, used, or invisible, while men have been sold such a cheapened version of sex, they don't know what they're missing. The Great Sex Rescue hopes to turn all of that around, developing a truly biblical view of sex where mutuality, intimacy, and passion reign.

Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Story
In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls - resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder - and trapped them in a cycle of shame.

For the first time in history, the average age for an American woman having her first child, 26, is younger than the average age of her first marriage, 27. More children than ever are growing up in fatherless homes, despite the overwhelming evidence that in every measurable way this is bad for the child. The Center for Disease Control also recently reported a dramatic rise in sexually transmitted disease nationwide. In Rhode Island alone, since the onset of online dating, reported cases of Syphilis has risen 79%, and HIV has increased by 33%.

Publisher's Summary
Discover a renewed biblical vision for sex, singleness, and relationships, and transform into an empowered woman of faith equipped to navigate today's dating culture with vision, clarity, and freedom.
Let's face it: Being single in today's culture as a woman of faith can be a struggle fest. But it doesn't have to be. With real talk and straight wisdom, speaker, podcaster, and founder of The Refined Woman Kat Harris says it's time for a new conversation about singleness, sex, and desire.
Growing up at the height of the purity movement, Kat knew this much: Good Christians don't have sex until marriage. But approaching 30 and thrust into the New York City dating scene, she found a set of rules was not a compelling enough reason to keep her clothes on. Caught between purity culture's rules and popular culture's do what feels good, Kat began a multi-year journey searching for answers to the biggest questions about sexuality and faith:
- What does the Bible really say about sex?
- Why does almost everyone deal with some sort of sexual shame?
- But really - what's a single girl to do with her sexual desire?
- What if we never get married...then what?
It turns out Kat was asking questions that countless women were dying to ask, but didn't know they had the permission to do so. Hungry for clarity, she researched, wrestled, and discovered a God who wasn't afraid or ashamed of sex and desire as she thought he might be. In actuality, God created sex and desire within humanity and called it very good. Now, she believes God desires to restore a generation disillusioned with purity culture and Christian dating, discouraged about their singleness, ashamed of their sexual desire, and uncertain how to practically walk this season out well.
Join Kat on her messy, sometimes painful, and always honest journey to discovering God's heart for sexuality, desire, singleness, and our purpose within it all.

A book for anyone and everyone!
The honesty, the wit/humor, and the message is for anyone who is single, engaged, or married because we all know single girls and most of us struggle to talk to them/ourselves about sex and what we were taught about it growing up. I love the fact that this isn't a book to convince anyone to be like the author, but it opens up the conversations that need to happen no matter what your beliefs are both on religion and sex.

Loved it!
I’m a single woman in my 30’s who struggles with my relationship with God. This book explained many core beliefs the harsh Christian beliefs that I grew up with and despised. I realized that many of these beliefs caused me to resent the church. However, God’s word is much different as beautifully explained in this book. It brought me more peace and encouragement as I move forward to mend my relationship with God. It’s much more than a book about sex before marriage. It’s a book that will open your eyes and heart to his true will if you’re ready to receive these messages. I wish more churches would present sexual ideologies in this way. It’s an amazing read and perspective.

When your friend recommends a book, you give it a read. This one did not disappoint. Not only did it tackle “purity culture” head on but it deconstructed and reconstructed the ideas behind sex, sexuality, and identity as they stem from Christ. Bought two- on purpose!
This book is amazing!!! I loved it so much I bought it again in hard copy. Growing up in purity culture I can say I am a lover of God who values purity but is sick of living a “because I said so” life when it comes to my beliefs on both of these things. Kat did a beautiful job of delving into these topics from a Biblical, logical, personal, practical, scientific, and vulnerable position...this is the kind of book the world needs more of.

Story
Approaching his 30th birthday, Sopan Deb had found comfort in his day job as a writer for the New York Times and a comedian. But his stage material highlighting his South Asian culture only masked the insecurities borne from his family history. Sure, Deb knew the facts: His parents, both Indian, separately immigrated to North America in the 1960s and 1970s. They were brought together in a volatile and ultimately doomed arranged marriage and raised a family in New Jersey before his father returned to India alone. But Deb had never learned who his parents were as individuals.

Story
A raccoon bite on the arm doesn’t seem that serious, but it soon becomes a life-or-death medical crisis for Melissa Loomis. After days of treatment for recurring infection, it becomes obvious her arm must be amputated. Rewired is the inspirational, miraculous story of Dr. Ajay Seth’s revolutionary surgery that allows Melissa to not just move a prosthetic arm simply by thinking, but to actually feel with the prosthetic hand, just as she would with her natural arm. This resulted in what others have recognized as the world’s most advanced amputee.

Story
In 1959, the Soviet probe Luna 3 took the first photos of the far side of the Moon. Even in their poor resolution, the images stunned scientists: The far side is an enormous mountainous expanse, not the vast lava plains seen from Earth. Subsequent missions have confirmed this in much greater detail. How could this be, and what might it tell us about our own place in the universe? As it turns out, quite a lot. When the Earth Had Two Moons is an astonishing exploration of planet formation and the origins of life by one of the world’s most innovative planetary geologists.

Story
Dangerous, filthy, and falling apart, garbage piled on its streets and entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble; New York’s terrifying, if liberating, state of nature in 1978 also made it the capital of American culture. Over the next thirty-plus years, though, it became a different place - kinder and meaner, richer and poorer, more like America and less like what it had always been.
