Publisher's summary

After being launched from their container ships in the Gulf of Mexico, the three specially calibrated nuclear warheads carried by Shahab-3 ICBM’s detonated in space at 10:58 AM, directly over Utah, Kansas and West Virginia.

For a fraction of a millisecond, the late morning October sky brightened, the event over with so quickly it was basically imperceptible from the ground.

With a loud “snap”, the century old chunk of oak Jethro “JT” Clarke was working on exploded as the hydraulic pressure of the wood splitter finally overcame the incredible tensile strength of the ancient log, sending a cloud of superfine dust from a termite nest into his face.

Walking away from the splitter, JT looked to the southern sky, wiping the fine dust from his nose and eyes with his ever present blue shop rag, when for just an instant, the sky appeared to brighten. “What-da-hell-was-that” he said to himself.

His vision blurry from the dust, JT looked at the rag in his hand. Then, smelling it, he immediately picked up the putrid scent of carburetor cleaner, quickly dismissing the event as being nothing more than him inadvertently getting a nose full of the harsh chemical cleaner.

Little did JT know, what he had witnessed would ultimately end up being anything but “nothing”.

Not the best story but not the worst

The storyline is typical of the genre. It’s not the best I’ve listened to and certainly not the worst. It has its good moments and a few twists that I enjoyed. For the length of the story I think it was worth the credit. My biggest issue with this story is how fast society falls apart after the power goes out.

Action Packed!

A friend of mine, who is also an author, suggested that I read/listen to this author.
I am very glad that I took his advice!
Not only is the storyline action packed. It has great characters and the ebb and flow is perfect.
The narrator does an awesome job with the characters and is not dull and boring at all!
You will not be disappointed if you like this genre of books!

New genre for me, gripping.

For 8 yrs near the end of my working days, I worked at OEM Fabricators in Woodville, WI, weekend overnight shift. It was a company that peaked around 350 employees before the late Bush economic crash, but on those weekend nights, 6pm Friday to 6am Saturday and the same the next 2 days until early Monday morning, we were a skeleton crew of 8 of us in that big plant, 8 of us picked largely because we were capable of figuring what to do and how to do it with no significant supervisory folks around.

On those nights, I listened constantly to Audible on headphones. For the first 6 hours, up to midnight, I'd listen to the Wall St. Journal (amazingly, on the deeper pages I'd get stuff like some of the best music recommendations anywhere, one notable one being Cross Canadian Railway - the other CCR - fronted by Cody Canada ). After midnight, I'd switch my Audible to a book. Anything from Atlas Shrugged to Willie Nelson's autobiography (he probably, like Joe Nirmaier here, is due for a sequel 😉 ). I'm pretty sure Jeff Hutchins narrated some of what I listened to, because that great voice is SO familiar, in a good way. Kind of like Walter Cronkite in the simple sound of credibility. (Equally valuable in fiction and news!)

It could really happen!

Excellent story line, and Jeff Hutchins narration was like I was right there with them!

Great book great narrator

The narrator made me think of the dukes of hazard.. actually the book kind of seemed like that Dukes family in the apocalypse, minus the general Lee.

Talk about engaging!

This was an awesome story. From the realistic perspective of the author to the relatable and likable characters I couldn’t stop listening. Definitely left wanting more. I highly recommend you give this a listen you will not be disappointed.

Great Listen!

This is such a great and easy listen in the evenings and driving on the road. Informative and entertaining. Eye opening on what we need to prepare for in our falling free America. Raised in MN and living WI by Joe it was neat with noting all the locations he was explaining. I sure can’t wait for a sequel. Five Stars Joe! Well Done!
