Long-listed, Library Journal Best Books of the Year, 2024

This program is read by Hugo Award-winning author Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Murderbot meets Redshirts in a delightfully humorous tale of robotic murder from the Hugo-nominated author of Elder Race and Children of Time.

To fix the world they must first break it, further.

Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service.

When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away.

Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

Sometimes all it takes is a nudge to overcome the limits of your programming.

Absolutely loved Un-Charles wandering journey across a changing world. A tour to see the many failings of humanity and the limitations of robotic creativity.

All while a well meaning friend the wonk tries to figure out what in the world happened, and how could everything have changed so quickly. Is there a reason? Does there need to be one? could all the jokes right before the end of the world about a protagonist computer virus disrupting robots to make them heroes in their own journey be correct?

Quite a lot of fun in a wonderfully imagined world. definitely for anyone who wonders if they left the lights on when they've left for a trip. Or for anyone who is convinced they can change the world if only they could finish their task list.

Looking for purpose in-between items on a task list.

A excellent, near future, dystopian heroes journey, from the perspective of a robot.

This novel has a bit of the humor of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy." With a bit less over the top ridiculousness, and a bit more, applicable moral dilemma, questioning the role of robots, AI, and the related effects on humanity and society.

I fell easily into this charming and sophisticated world. Wondminimum.

Fascinating story of the existential decay of human societies. Clever banter and interesting characters. Somewhat depressing, considering our current world state.

Not as humorous as it’s billed.

I almost listened to this straight through. I do already love everything from Adrian Tchaikovsky, but this one didn't disappoint. I wish I could speak as well as half his characters. There are constant concepts worth retaining, but it's wrapped in a story that naturally delivers them without feeling like it's just an idea delivery mechanism. I can't recommend it any higher for anyone that might like a new take on a common scifi trope
