Publisher's summary

Master Sergeant Gant Maker was a highly decorated and well-respected marine - until his last mission left him as the sole survivor of an encounter with a vicious race called the Vacra. Served up as a scapegoat and drummed out of the military, he has since lived a life of seclusion with only an adopted alien as a companion.

Now the Vacra have returned. As the only person to have ever faced them and survived, Maker is reinstated in the corps and given the onerous task of finding this enemy on a world located at the edge of known space. Assisting him is an unlikely band of military rejects, including a blind sharpshooter, an unstable psychic, and a genetically engineered killing machine who refuses to fight.

Given that the Vacra have superior weapons and technology, Maker recognizes that his team is at a distinct disadvantage. But marines are nothing if not resourceful, and Maker has an audacious plan that just may level the playing field - if it doesn't get them all killed.

On the fringe of being great

I enjoy a good space opera from time to time, even if I do hate that terminology, and look for it periodically. hardman is one of my favorite authors, and it has another favorite narrator, so I made time for this book. I must say that I don't recount what happens in a book. If you want that, read the blurb, it's what it's for after all, but for the sake of understanding here is a brief recap. A hardcase SOB space Marine and his squad encounter an alien threat. Everytbody, but him gets killed, and he is blamed for the deaths (at least they suspect that he did it, don't want to give anything away), then on an outer planet sometime later these same aliens show up and start whacking the locals. He gets called back in to go fight the bugs.

Now, if it were me, and I got slammed for telling the truth, no one believed me, and I suffered for it I sure as hell wouldn't be going back to help anyone fight the menace I shouted about so long ago. No matter my fate I'd stay put and let the higher ups try to deal with it, bu that makes a for a dull story, and no one wants to read about a hardcase marine sitting atound and baking muffins or whatever, so he (unlike me) agrees to go back and start kicking butt. Master Sergeant Gant Maker then proceeeds to tackle the enemy head on.

The story is action packed, as anyone who knows Hardman's style would expect, and it is full of epic battles and one on one cobat scenes that will take you to your knees. The aliens are legit tough as balls, and it doesn't look good for the home team. Still, Maker isn't a pansy and he takes the fight to them.

I must say, that the cover of this book is really fantastic. The art is beautiful and realistic, but more importantly it lets you see just what to expect in the book. There are no surprises and you know exactly what's coming in the way of action.

The one thing that really drove me crazy is that for as battle-hardened as Maker is, he allows himself to get sidewiped a lot. He rarely seems to know what is happening around him, and that raises the bar on my suspension of disbelief. Seriously, how do you live to fight for so long if you get blindsided everytime you go to war? That is a big nitpick for me, and I will take off a star. The rest of it, though, is pure gold. You will really love the battles and the tension. This is book one in a series, so look for more to come later.

Naramore is the perfect partner for Hardman, as their styles compliment one another quite well. I have listened to numerous novels read by Naramore, and he is never more in his element than when he is reading something by Hardman. He brings Maker to life, and you could see a young R. Lee Emory playing the guy. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Hard core military science fiction

Would you listen to Terminus again? Why?

If you like fast paced, hard core military science fiction then you will like this book and as a bonus the lead character has an out of this world pet.
It is a good listen, did not want to turn it off when work ended. Narrator does a great job conveying emotions of the characters

Any additional comments?

Enjoyable

This is a simple but well told story about a Marine whos encountered a new hostile alien race. The plot isnt complex and the characters are lovable misfits. This book isnt anything spectacular but is well written and entertaining. I've already purchased the next book. My only complaint with this book is how our hero gets blamed for things in the end when it should be apparent he was the only reason they survived AND he didnt really do much to defend his actions either. It didnt really make sense to me but alls well that ends well i suppose.

Could be a lot better!

After listening to this novel I felt like I was listening to a live comic book. The narrator did all his stuff right, but the storyline was way out there. The main character seemed to have forgotten all the stuff that make hero's, He was hesitant on action and forgot how to fight close quarters. I have read more than enough Space Opera to know the difference between great and not

Very Good Space Opera

I really enjoyed Hardman's Kid Sensation Series, and I expected this to be a similar middle grade book. I was surprised that this was a very different style of book. This is not a book targeted to kids. That said there is minimal material that would be inappropriate for younger listeners. I liked that we could have adult targeted book without the excessive swearing, sex, and "grittiness" that is so prevalent today because many authors seem to think it is necessary to make a book "believable".

This is a very good Sci-fi story. Great characters, both human and alien. Duplicity, adventure, corruption, and well written battle scenes. Characters each have their own motivations that are not always clear at first glance. I think that this really sets up this new series, and I look forward to future Fringe World books. That said, the plot in this story is nicely wrapped up by the end and if this is the only book in the series that you read it is still worth it.

Naramore does a great job at narrating this book, with distinct character voices that helps bring the story to life. I want to thank Kevin Hardman for providing me with this review copy of Terminus.

Ughhh

Good if one has never been in the military. Don't think the author knows too much about military structure.

Easy to read and follow

As described - the guy who was fired puts together a team of misfits to go and fight another ant-like race who are not playing ball with the rest of the universe and are aggressive, backstabbing and not nice in general....

Great Narration!

A first rate story read by a first rate narrator. Hardman is a talented author, and I love the individual voices that Naramore brings to his narration.
