As much as Beatrice Hyde-Clare relished the challenge of figuring out who murdered a fellow guest during a house party in the Lake District, she certainly does not consider herself an amateur investigator. So when a London dandy falls dead at her feet in the entryway of a London Daily Gazette, she feels no compulsion to investigate. It was a newspaper office, after all, and reporters are already on the case as are the authorities.

Absorbing historical mystery & great characters
An absorbing cozy historical mystery that is elevated by a great cast of characters. Jennifer Ashley’s Scandal Above Stairs is narrated by Kat Holloway, a Victorian cook. She is an intelligent and observant woman, who provides a prospective on Victorian society I have not often read. I enjoyed this book more then the first installment, as I already had a connection to the characters. I am enjoying the building of the relationships amongst the characters. Not only between Kat and Daniel McAdam, Kat’s love interest and mysterious investigator of crimes, but also the building relationships with all characters: Tess - Kat’s new assistant cook with a difficult background; Cynthia - a lady of the house how feels constrained by societies expectations; Mr. Thanos, Daniel’s brilliant friend whose a bit oblivious to world around him; Daniel’s son James, who always wants to be in the middle of the action; and Mr. Davis, the butler with his love of reading the newspapers. Overall the clever plot of Scandal Above Stairs has witty dialogue peppered with descriptions of Victorian cooking and interesting character developments.

Another excellent visit with Kat Holloway
I adore Jennifer Ashley's mysteries. In this outing, valuables are stolen from wealthy homes. Kat takes on a kitchen assistant who assists her, Daniel, and Lady Cynthia solve the thefts and murders.
Daniel reveals more about himself to Kat. And just who is his mysterious employer? Perhaps the next book will reveal more.
Lady Cynthia and Elgin Thanos develop a deeper friendship. That's interesting to watch.
The narration is wonderful.
I recommend this book. While it is a standalone reading A Soupcon of Poison & Death Below Stairs will better acquaint a reader with the recurring characters.

Good narration, Victorian mystery
This story continues from the prequel and the first book. A type of cozy Victorian mystery with just a touch of romance. The main character is a com in a house of the aristocracy. She is observant and solves the mystery.

Just fine
I liked the first in the series better, though this one was still fine. Toward the end of it, I truly did not know who some of the characters and villains were, but that’s probably my fault for not focusing as well. I may keep an eye on the third one if I can find it for sale. The changes in the voices throw me off sometimes, especially Daniel’s with his many disguises. I seem to like his normal voice the least. Cat’s voice sounds like it changes too, but maybe it’s my imagination.

Too much food. Not necessary to story.
It is a good story, but would have been half as long if preperation of every meal had not been described in great detail.
