Publisher's Summary

The first book in a new, savagely intense series from New York Times best-selling author Lisa Renee Jones.

Rick Savage, but they call him Savage and for a reason. He can make you laugh and then rip your heart out. No one knows that more than me, Candace Marks, the woman he left bleeding from the heart. I loved him. Lord help me, I’ve never stopped loving him.

Now, I’m engaged to another man, a brutal man I’m trapped into marrying, when to my shock, Savage returns home. Savage, who I haven't heard from in years. I want to hate him. I have ever reason to hate him, but I can’t. I still love him, and I fear he will save me just to leave me bleeding one last time. He stirs my desires, a dark, delicious, and dangerous man destined to hurt me and leave me. This time, I’m not sure I'll survive.

Confused

So...I haven’t finished the book yet but wanted to review now... I’m so confused by this book. First, the story line has SO SO SO much potential and is quite engaging. That’s the only reason I’m going to keep listening to this until the end. Narrators are also doing their best with the characters and had anyone else been used, it could have been way worse.

This is my problem: Savage and Candace are idiots... like not just silly in love... but straight up idiots. I love me some good angst in a story but it’s so forced in this that it just makes them seem so stupid. Candace way more than Savage(Rick) but he has moments too... especially when she accepts him and then he’s like, “daddy told her bad things so now I’m going to pull away because I wasn’t super serious when I said I’m not leaving again”... queue eye roll...

Also. Sex scenes could be more.... well, just more. It’s vanilla sex.

———-

Ok, another thought, I wish the author would have built their back story. It was 5 min of, hi, we are strangers, come home with me while I tell you I don’t normally do this, and then insta love within 10 min and the meet the daddy. HE didn’t even fight them being together. Lol Savage stands up to him for 2 seconds and this 5 start general just accepts him (also....stupid...5 star? Come on.... being a veteran, let me say that a 5 star isn’t doing what her dad is doing... I’d doubt a 1 start would too. Lol)

I really want to say more but I don’t want to spoil. That last thought was only the first chapter so .... take that as you will.

I’m glad this one was part of the escape package. I’d be angry if I used a credit.

Overall - Meh

First, this is not the first in a trilogy, it's the first third of a book. Which is fine if you pick it up as part of the Escape package, not so much if you use a credit.

Second, the narration of this book is why I dislike dual narrators. When the female narrator especially reads the male dialog it is very jarring as it sounds nothing like the male narrator.

Great Story, Love Savage!

I absolutely love Savage but I have to admit Candice does annoy me a bit with how much she keeps repeating over and over again in the book that he is going to leave or that he left. I wish she was more optimistic about his return. Love the story and can't wait to hear more!

Savage and Candace face danger and intrigue while fighting for their second chance in this squeal inducing suspence with all the hotness Lisa Renee Jones has made me a fan of.

holes in story

The book was well written but felt there was holes. I got lost in the story and couldn't connect with the characters. The narration was done just and was enjoyable to listen.

LOVED IT THE SECOND TIME AROUND

the first time I listen to this series oh, I read it with a lot of interruptions and lost comprehension of what was really going on the second time I listen to it I am retired and the whole series was so much more different and so much better because I actually knew what was going on.

Rick Savage and Candace Marks 2nd Chance at love

Finally we have Walker Security specialist Savage’s story but unfortunately we once again are subjected to a 3 part story stretched out Over 3 books. Fortunately there are a few weeks left to the Escape package and this is on it. It was not worth a credit on its on as it is only 1/3 of a story. Ideally there should be 1 decent well edited book per story and while it is necessary to give the backstory and Character development for the new characters there did not need to be so much filler. Some suspense and some mystery and the usual sex though fairly tame. I like the characters but some of this book was a snooze fest. Again this volume not worth a credit but if bundled with other 2 books And edited it seems like it would be a hit. Narration was good but a bit too much Savannah Peachwood. Her male voice is too gravelly and she often give a goody two shoes Impression that can be too much. Jason Clarke was good. They should try duet performances.

Didn't realize it was a cliffhanger

I never would have listened if I had realized it was a 3 part book. I really enjoyed the plot, although the romance part was sorely grating on my nerves! All the 'he's gonna leave-no he's not-yes he is-no he's not' got pretty old. But I ask you, in what other category of book do you find 'cliffhangers'? Do you listen to horror novels just to have to buy another book to get to the end? What about self-help? Do you listen to a third of the book, only to discover the part that finally convinces you not to commit suicide is in part 3? What about biographies? Book one is ages 1-12, book two is 13-30, and so on? No one would buy them! Only in the romance category do authors require you to buy 2, 3, even 4 or more books to complete one story. I don't mean a series, those are normally more than one complete story with some of the same characters involved, but this is simply one story, divided into 3 parts so that you have to buy 3 books to read one story. I have long refused to buy these, and did so here accidentally. It's like going into a bookstore where they rip all of their books down the spine into 3 parts and sell you one at a time for the same price as the entire book. It's a scam tactic, and I will not buy another book from this author, so it really has the opposite result of her intended 'make them buy another one' plan. Audible should ensure that all cliffhangers be clearly labeled as such, because when they are not, it feels purposefully deceptive.
