He left to prove himself worthy of her.

He returned to find her claimed by his High Alpha.

Mikah Kade never wanted the Kade empire or the corruption rotting at its core. After years buried in government secrets in D.C., he’s finally home to claim what was always meant to be his: his land, his pack, and Gracie.

But Gracie is no longer free.

She’s been politically bound to the one man Mikah hates more than death. Gregor Kade. His father. The High Alpha.

As Mikah digs deeper, he uncovers an empire built on council corruption and the brutal control of omegas. But none of it matters as much as the one thing he refuses to lose: his mate.

When Gracie’s reaction to seeing him again sends her into heat, Gregor moves to force the bond himself.

Mikah will burn the whole empire down before he lets that happen.

But when the night ends with Gregor Kade dead, the Council wants blood. And every finger points to the Kade brothers.

Now Mikah must prove his innocence before the Council destroys him…or lose his fated mate forever.

This was fine. I usually enjoy the more political side of books, allowing the root of the story to be told but this shifter romance leaned a bit TOO heavy on the bureaucratic side. There was always some line to follow, some test, papers or numbers to seek, some upper chain of command to go through, some politically "correct" way of doing something... Just... so many stalls. This is a very short book and majority of it there was always a blaring "access denied" hold up. I was feeling rage baited at a point haha. It's quite different than most shifter reads I've come across, as though I'm used to pack politics/ pack hierarchy, the environment/ their world is still very rooted in something feral/ from nature. This title... Not so much. Very technical. But it's different! If the next book is free to listen I'd try it out to see if the experience is less sterile but all in all. Very fine.

Fine. 2.75
