“A manual for fixing our culture…In writing that is elegant and penetratingly simple, [hooks] gives voice to some things we may know in our hearts but need an interpreter like her to process.”—Black Issues Book Review

New York Times bestselling author, acclaimed visionary and cultural critic bell hooks continues her exploration of the meaning of love in contemporary American society, offering groundbreaking, critical insight about Black people and love.

Written from both historical and cultural perspectives, Salvation takes an incisive look at the transformative power of love in the lives of African Americans. Whether talking about the legacy of slavery, relationships and marriage in Black life, the prose and poetry of Martin Luther King, Jr., James Baldwin, and Maya Angelou, the liberation movements of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, or hip hop and gangsta rap culture, hooks lets us know what love’s got to do with it.

Combining the passionate politics of W.E.B. DuBois with fresh, contemporary insights, hooks brilliantly offers new visions that will heal our nation’s wounds from a culture of lovelessness. Her writings on love and its impact on race, class, family, history, and popular culture will help us heal and create beloved American communities.

Once again bell hooks gets to the root of what is needed in the Black community in n order to free us from ourselves, thus freeing us from others. This is the third book by hooks' I've listened to: "The Will to Change" and "Communion" proceed this one. Each book is a compliment to the others. I so appreciate the spiritual connecting the titles of these books reverberate.

"Salvation" is a book you must read!

Love Saves

Was excited to dive into her most recent work but it seems she hasn't been keeping up with the times. Black (and female) liberation will only come from technological and scientific literacy (outside of white education). She panders to the false narrative that love is what is currently missing from the black experience, but white people have far less love and spiritual development in their lives than any other group of people, yet have successfully enslaved the planet because of their positions in tech and science. It is specifically lack of education that is missing, and the lack of motivation to educate ones self for free, being that the information is now easier to access than ever before for black people. This book feels frustrating to listen to in 2025, it just feels behind the times because the author herself, like many Americans, is not educated in tech literacy.

Pandering, missing key advice regarding technological literacy
