Still loving the world building

The story was interesting and the author, for the most part, writes great characters. My problem with this book and the first is with the female characters. This is the second book with a whiny and insecure female lead and it detracts from the story. Too bad because I very much like the world she created.

The narration was pretty good.

Miscommunication trope

I went into this expecting a swoon-worthy interspecies love story, and while it didn’t fully deliver on that front, there were still elements I really appreciated. The author created a beautifully immersive world—the merfolk lore, history, and traditions were vivid and thoughtfully developed, which made the setting feel rich and unique.

That said, the romance fell a bit short for me. It leans heavily on a miscommunication trope, compounded by both leads lacking confidence, which made certain chapters feel more frustrating than compelling.

The story does come together nicely in the end, but overall, I was left wishing for a bit more—especially in the romance department, I give it 🌶️ one on the spice level.
