An "amazing" account of Britain's most audacious act of subterfuge in WWII: an undercover raid of Rommel's stronghold in Tobruk (The Daily Mirror).

On a scorching September day in 1942, the Special Air Service (SAS), a special forces unit of the British Army, pulled off one of the most daring, top-secret ruses of the Second World War. The plan (sanctioned by Churchill): cover a grueling 2,000 miles of the Sahara desert to attack German general Erwin Rommel's seemingly impregnable port fortress in North Africa from the rear to break free and arm more than 30,000 Allied POWs. Led by Captain Herbert Buck and posing as Afrika Korps soldiers, complete with German uniforms and weaponry, the crew broke into the enemy stronghold Trojan Horse-style as part of the coordinated attack on Tobruk.

"Intensively researched...powerfully written," and culled from the private diaries of the do-or-die maverick heroes, this extraordinary story of the sneak attack on the notorious Desert Fox is more thrilling than any fiction. A bold, outrageous, and rule-shattering mission impossible, SAS Ghost Patrol is "one of the great untold stories of WWII" (Bear Grylls).

This is one of around 20 histories and novels by Lewis about the secret war by the British and French Resistance, especially in North Africa.

Closely related to his book and the movie, “Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and dramatized in the TV series “Rogue Heroes.”

Tight action sequences with documentary research plus a strong narrator move it forward with momentum.

This is an incredible story of fearlessness and chaos. War is such a waste of humanity and resources.

An excellent book overall. A great build up and introduction to various characters from different branches of British Special Services, SAS, SIG, SOE, and Commandos. it regails some of their early exploits and and background on the concept and creation of SIG. Then it shift to one of the most audacious missions of WWII, retake Tobruk.

Expertly relayed tale of British combined special services action

These different British military elements took unusual measures to support attacks on the Axis forces. Going in as Germans took dedication. I thought it funny that the German forces had no respect for the Italian troops.
