Publisher's summary

He hated the rules until the power grid failed.

Tyler Ford is a tour guide, a brother, and the son of a prepper from Whitefish, Montana. Robbed of a childhood and forced to learn his father’s stringent rules of survival for every kind of apocalypse, he couldn’t wait to leave home, but when an EMP obliterates the United States electrical grid, takes out communication and stalls vehicles, Tyler must face the past and remember what he taught him if he hopes to make it out of Vegas alive.

When chaos erupts, will you know the rules to survive?

Erika Lyons just wanted an evening away from the hectic world of hotel management but she got more than she expected. There’s only one thing worse than a bad date, that’s relying on them to keep you alive. Demanding guests were a challenge, desperate ones, pure hell. As food stops being delivered, vehicles clog up the streets, and society begins to unravel, sin city could be the most dangerous place in America.

In a world without power, fighting to stay alive may be the only rule that matters.

With no warning, no communication, and planes falling out of the sky, the Ford’s may be the only ones who know what it takes to thrive. Can Tyler, and two ordinary strangers survive the perilous journey home to Montana? Can the Ford family hold it together long enough to push back the tide of violence, looters and roving gangs? And will they help the community survive as the world is thrown into darkness?

Rules of Survival is book one in Survival Rules, a post-apocalyptic EMP thriller series following the Ford family and their community as they fight to survive after an EMP destroys the nation’s power grid.

Realistic Survival Fiction

I received a review copy of this audiobook.

I really enjoyed this story. I've enjoyed zombie fiction in the past, but more in spite of the zombies than because of them. This story has basically all that I like from those without the absurdity of undead. I'm not enough of an expert to assess realism in the techniques invoked, but it holds up to my layman's eye.

EMP apocalyptic fiction, .... who knows?

When, not if will it happen?
Although I struggled at first with what reminded me of a B movie script I began thinking. If you ever enjoyed a old western movie this book has many similarities. imagine the sheriff, his prisoner and a rich spoiled woman as the only survivors of a stage holdup. Now, they have to make it to civilization through Indian territory. When they get there, after many trials and tribulations they find a different kind of problem in that town.
I look forward to future books you will too.

Great addition to the EMP apocalypse genre!

What other book might you compare this book to and why?
Going Home by A. American. Because the power grid is out and they're trying to make their way home.

Who was your overall favorite character and why?
Tyler. He's the main character and an overall good guy.

Which character – as performed by the narrator – was your favorite?
Probably Tyler. He did all the male voices great. He made Erica especially whiny, which was unavoidable since the author wrote her especially whiny.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, and I practically did. I fell asleep an hour before it ended. I woke up the following day and finished it immediately.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, because it was enjoyable.

Have you listened to any of Miles Meili’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, not really. The beginning was awesome though and got a chuckle out of me. Talk about a bad first date! I was hooked from that moment on.

What did you love best about the book?
The beginning, during the first date.

Which scene was your favorite?
The first date.

Which character did you like least? And why?
The logical response would be Gabriel or Marcus, since they're the main bad guys, who escaped when their prison plane crashed. But I really really didn't like the main female character, Erica. She's a rich, spoiled, whiny brat that speaks in a high, whiny, valley girl tone. That could have been partly the narrator's fault, but that's how the author wrote her. I kept asking myself why Terry kept trying with her, just leave her!

Any additional comments?
Excellent book! Great narration. I can't wait to start the next one. I just hope Erica has matured and isn't as whiny.

Nothing too special

This is a typical EMP disaster story. It wasn’t terrible, but some of the writing was not so good. There were a lot of lists. We all know what preppers are, yet the story, multiple times, gave long lists of either supplies or actions required to be a prepper. For example, detailing every single thing in a backpack all separated by commas. There was one particular part that detailed every possible thing a human could do. Kind of like this: Our dad taught us hunting, game-cleaning, fishing, hiking, climbing, backpacking, swimming, canning, archery, shooting, gun-cleaning, cooking, foraging, water collection, water filtering, shelter building, morse code, fire making, self defense, hand-to-hand combat, bike-riding, etc., etc. and on and on and on………..A good writer doesn’t do that.

too short

Much shorter than I prefer, there is room for so much more and I usually require at least 9-10 hours worth for the cost, especially considering all the different POVs, but it's certainly a well written and interesting plot. Worth the read, and considering the narrator worth the listen, but still wish it were longer.

Underwhelmed

Narrator was great, but the story feels like it just didn't go anywhere worth following.

Good premise, but underwhelming execution.
