Ruby Leaving Texas begins in the heyday of the 1980s in the Lower East Side of New York City, where graffiti artist Whiteboy meets the perfect woman and marries her.
In Ruby's never-ending quest for calm, the couple moves to her small hometown in rural north Texas and then out into the desert of New Mexico, where Ruby breaks down and runs off with a boyfriend from 20 years before. The story takes place in the mind of Whiteboy as he drives back to Texas in an attempt to find Ruby, and, perhaps, to kill her.
As the story progresses, the listener learns more about the sad and elusive Ruby, and sees the insanity that has slowly taken over the perspective of the protagonist. Ruby Leaving Texas takes you to the moment where the past and future meet - the split second where sanity and insanity collide.

American story-in that era of new age after birth
Yeah, i remember the late 70's into the 80's.. just catching some breath from the late 60's into the 70's...it was the 70's when the substance rained down everywhere....the art, the drugs and the distorted left over philosophies. Any of us that passed through that time will recall so many places...it was a run down the road time, for many, the frantic search for what we were not, running from what we were suppose to be. Although i was mostly out west, almost in another universe...I wondered who the 'taggers' were...or the Punks, and mosh etc...a distant world that Dale pulls perfectly composed descriptions of these urban-scapes ...trying to parse out a people and their habitats..and habits...the hard city, in its humanity... all the while, weaving the elements of his NE small town sense, along with all the conflicts, values and cultural infusions of that time and place. A well spun story that of course revolves around Ruby...who you will get to know well, as the tale heads south. Dale offers up the honest thoughts that teeter at the edge most avoid, and any that do partake...will muse , all the stories & the whimper and bang...it has gone down...but you want to hear it again, just maybe you missed something.

Art is a lie that makes us realize truth...
Finally had a chance to listen to the audiobook version of my brother Dale Lotreck’s compelling book RUBY Leaving Texas. In the opening he states it’s a work of fiction... 😉 felt a bit autobiographical to me...
It’s a rich, dark and fascinating journey. I’m so happy Dale made the audiobook and I was happy to support this endeavor.
In the words of Pablo Picasso:
“We all know that Art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize truth at least the truth that is given us to understand. The artist must know the manner whereby to convince others of the truthfulness of his lies.”
