Publisher's summary

If you thought death was the end...you’d be dead wrong.

Life was barely manageable after my mom was murdered three years ago. I wasn’t sure what my purpose was anymore. But then on my 21st birthday, I drank a little too much and fell from the roof of my nine-story apartment building.

I died. Then...I un-died.

Enter Hayden, my really bossy (and hot) guardian angel whose duty is to train me to be the next “Soldier of Light.”

Sound fun? Well, it’s not. I save dead people, helping them move on to the World of Light. And to make matters even worse, they are all troubled souls stuck in the Dark Realm with the devil and his army of demonic creatures. They roam my city’s streets at night, waiting for me to screw up.

The Afterlife is one of Death’s best kept secrets, and I’m living proof. I’m pretty sure I’m the wrong person for this job, despite what Hayden thinks. Guess I’m stuck saving the dead.

Interesting take on angels

If you’re looking for a book that’s fast paced and up beat then this isn’t the book for you. However if you don’t mind a book that’s a little melancholy with a story that gets nicely developed than this is the book for you. The story did take me a chapter or two to sink into but when i realized the book is about a depressed girl w/a sometimes awful temper I was able to comfortably listen and enjoy the story.

Good but not what I was expecting

It became clear to me very quickly that I was not the intended audience for this book, I think I was drawn to it because of it’s premise of spiritual warfare. While there are religious undertones many aspects of this story directly contradict what the Bible tells us about salvation. The main character also drinks and swears excessively. If you prefer to read Christian, clean or wholesome books this story is not for you.

Setting those things aside and suspending my belief, I was very interested in the angels that we were introduced to and was eager to learn more about their culture and how they relate to each other. The story was well written, difficult concepts were clearly explained, and the world well developed. While I thought the author created some excellent imagery for her characters, I struggled to fall in love with Evika because she was too strong, too stubborn, and frequently put herself in too much trouble. I wanted to love her, to relate to her, but i just couldn’t get there. I definitely loved the narrator, she really brought the characters and scenes alive as I listened.

Overall, I was left both overwhelmed by very difficult situations that were too clearly described (trigger warnings all around) and wanting more of the light, fun romantic connection between Evika and her angel.

Interesting Twist on the Afterlife

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the first book in the Negative Zero series. It is a standalone book with no cliffhanger ending but it certainly does set up the continuation of the series.

This is an interesting twist on the afterlife and guardian angels. Evika is a very well-developed tragic 21- year-old character. It's her birthday - and sadly, also the anniversary date for the death of her mother - when she drinks too much and falls out of her apartment window, dying. But to everyone's surprise, she miraculously comes back to life due to her guardian angel Hayden's intervention. Poor Evika has tragedy oozing from her pores - yet you are riveted by her as she learns the truth about herself and her family history. This book is well written with very good world building.

Narrator, J. Elizabeth Anderson, did a great job and really complimented the written word.

A twist on angel lore

Snarky heroine ✔️
Hot guy with wings✔️
Birthright ✔️
A mission to accomplish for the good of humanity ✔️
Yep this book is right on point. I truly enjoyed getting to know these characters. They wiggled into my heart and easily became some of my book besties. I can not wait to see what happens when the story really starts to rev up.

Really enjoyed

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters although sometimes I found Evika a bit whiny and childish. I feel the narrator did a wonderful job. The author did a great job on the story and it had a smooth flow. Looking forward to the next book. I would recommend. (I received this audible book as an arc and am leaving a voluntary honest review)

Unique paranormal story to get you hooked

This was a very cool, unique paranormal story. Evika, a girl full of pain, dies due to a bad decision on her part. Now she is seeing the man from her dreams. His name is Hayden and he is her guardian angel. Quickly he tells Evika how she is special and why she was brought back to life. She has a supernatural job to do. A job that runs in her family. Soon she is discovering family secrets and what she thought she knew about her life is actually the opposite. As she tries to deal with her life changing drastically and having a big burden on her now, she is also still the young woman who is grieving the mother she knew. This writers style and the narrator went wonderfully together. I felt Evika's pain the whole way through. Don't worry this isn't a story to just break the listener/reader. There is hope in this book and a lesson that we never know what life truly has in store for us. And talk about a hunky angel! Where can we get a Hayden?! The attraction between Evika and Hayden is electric. Is she destined to follow in her father's footsteps? I can't wait for the next book to be released!

Its a Hit!!

Negative Zero by Ireland Gill and narrated by J. Elizabeth Anderson is an urban fantasy with a serious twist on necromancy, humans who deal with the dead. The first twist, said human has to die their "first" death.
Enter Evica, our FMC, out celebrating her 21st birthday when she falls 9 stories... and survives.
Enter Hayden, our MMC, Evica's Guardian Angel, who knows absolutely everything about her because he has been with her every moment of her life. Life has totally changed for both of them. She can see him now, but she can also see the dead that need to move on.
Its a great story and I cant wait to dive into the second book. Did I forget to mention that its the start of a series? Yes because now we can spend more time getting to know the various characters in depth.
My ONLY complaint is I don't feel the narrator did an appropriate job on sounding like a 21 year old. She did great with Mrs. M, the Russian "grandmother" and every male voice in the book. This is my only issue with everything.
Dive in and get to know the various characters, hopefully you will fall in love with them as I did.
