Publisher's Summary

Clutch: A Novel is the laugh-out-loud chick lit romance chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags - the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc.

With her best friend, bar owner Mike, by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks a lot of chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors, and finds the courage to discover someone onto whom she wants to hold: the “Clutch”.

Amusing Romance

Clutch is an amusing journey through, friendship, life, dating and handbags.
Caroline's Aunt Mimi inspired her love of all things handbag and encouraged her to chase her dream of making wonderful but affordable handbags. She encouraged her to go to Harvard in order to pursue her dream.
Probably my favourite character in this story is Mike, he is sweet, supportive, funny and he owns a bar so keeps our leading lady, Caroline topped up with wine as she stumbles from one disastrous man to another.
I found Caroline initially annoying, but her wittiness and intelligence had me really liking her after that initial irritation.
The plot was not one that we haven't seen before but the technique of chapters being named after bags that are associated with the men is unique and fun. I would class this as an enjoyable summer listen that will keep you amused but be warned about probable laughter. (if reading in a public place with headphones on)
Suzanne Barbetta didn't do a bad job with the vocal acting but she didn't blow me away. I found her to be consistent and clear in her voice acting and I think that on other books she could be outstanding but for me this wasn't a great match between book and narrator. That is the only criticism that I really have. For me it just wasn't the best pairing.

I adored Caroline and Mike's friendship.

CLUTCH is a quick read/listen. I adored Caroline and Mike's friendship. Especially the NERF gun battle. I laughed, I cried. The comparison of men and handbags. I honestly wish I were in the story. It was fascinating. The audio version of this book was well executed. Suzanne Barbetta did a great job reading. I enjoyed her voice. The audio itself was clear. No jumps or missing pieces. I've not read Lisa Becker's works before this. I really enjoyed her writing. And I've got a feeling I am gonna love anything I read from her now.

Adorable, Charming and LOL Funny

How I adored my morning subway commute listening to this charming romance!!! This is a story where each man our protagonist dates is introduced by the title of the chapter, a handbag (our heroine is a lover and hopeful purveyor of said handbags as well). From messenger bag to coin purse, and inevitably to Clutch, this delightful and delightfully narrated book had me laughing out loud on the subway and very sweetly moved at the end. For lovers of chick lit, Sex and the City, and a well needed laugh, this ones for you!!!

An entertaining chick flick

This is definitely what I would consider a light romance story, which is perfect when I need a break between heavy emotional books. While the ending was predictable in a When Harry Met Sally way, the journey was extremely entertaining with plenty of dating disasters to keep me interested. Each chapter is a short story about a new relationship that Caroline has while in the search for her "Clutch". There is not much detail given about each relationship (similar to a speed dating experience), but each one is an example of a romantic disaster and kept me laughing. I loved Mike and his easy banter and jokes about the men Caroline dated, he is definitely the one I rooted for.

Suzanne Barbetta did a great job narrating this book and brining the characters to life! This was my first experience listening to her, but she did not disappoint.

Do What You Love

This is a great chick-book....filled with the southern charm, fashionable handbags (of which are the Chapter names), humor, great sex (and not so great sex) and of course drama.......what woman could ask for more? I loved the fact that Mike, waited patiently for Caroline to decide that he is the one, after many failed relationships and his philandering while she is taking her time to decide. Mike's humor adds to this book-good job!

Sifting Through the Frogs....

The audiobook Clutch: A Novel by Lisa Becker, narrated by Suzanne Barbetta falls into the Chick-Lit genre. It is a hilariously entertaining novel about Caroline, a high-end handbag designer and business owner, on a quest to find her knight in shining armor, her soul mate, her true love. Along this journey, we are introduced to her many, many frogs, some of whom she thinks could be her actual Prince Charming, but none of them fit the bill, for each one falls short for one reason or another. Caroline's adventures with each of these men have their own chapter, cleverly and appropriately titled with the name of a different handbag. While I'm not as lucky as Caroline is in having my pick of so many different men, I found her situations to be quite relatable to my own never-ending search for Mr. Right. I felt like we were sipping wine together as she filled me in on the details of her life with family, friends, and lovers. From the sizzling bedroom scenes to the funny, and sometimes shocking, moments, I stayed thoroughly engaged in her story. This highly-engaging, well-written novel by Lisa Becker is for all you ladies out there who have already found your prince, as well as those, like myself, who are still searching and sifting your way through all those frogs. :-)

While I would have enjoyed reading Clutch: A Novel, my overall experiece was heightened, due to Suzanne Barbetta's wonderful narration. She brought the characters to life with her voices and inflections, making me feel immediately welcomed by old friends. I especially loved Caroline's accent, which was used consistently throughout the entire book. Barbetta's engaging delivery and entertaining interpretation of the text made for easy listening and kept me eagerly awaiting the next episode. I generally listen to mysteries, but after hearing the sample for this audiobook, I knew I had to hear more. Needless to say, it's a rare occasion I come across a sex scene while listening to my usual genre. For me, it feels odd making this comment, but I have to mention that Barbetta does a really good job in performing the bedroom scenes...movie-like performance! I always think about how amazing it would be to have a career as a narrator. However, after listening to delivery of these scenes, I am not sure I could do it without sounding ridiculous. It was so real, and she did an awesome job!

Without hesitation, I give Clutch: A Novel by Lisa Becker, narrated by Suzanne Barbetta 5/5 stars. This is my first book by both author and narrator. In my opinion, this book went from good to great after hearing the epilogue! I never saw that coming, and I LOVED it! Also, at the end of the audiobook, there is a preview of Becker's next novel, which I cannot wait to get when it comes out! If you made it this far in my review, chances are you are still interested in Clutch: A Novel...so what are you waiting for? Do yourself a favor and get the book. I'm confident you will not be disappointed and will enjoy it as much as I have! Happy listening!

Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. :-)

Gloriously Entertaining!!

I absolutely loved listening to this book! It is about dating and finding the right one with a best friend to help through all the rough patches. It was certainly a laugh-out-loud story and you can't help but love Caroline while at the same time wanting to hug her, smack her on the back of the head and laugh along with her in her adventures. The narrator did an awesome job with the voices and emotions! Suzanne Barbetta really brings the story to life and I will look for what other stories she has narrated. If your looking for a really fun and light-hearted listen that will make those of us taken glad we are taken then this book is for you!! You won't regret giving this story a chance! LOVED IT!!

Cute Experience

For me this was a really cute experience! I truly enjoyed the author’s work and the narrator’s voice acting! The story had a few good twists that made it unpredictable which helped me get hooked! And the acting felt real to me 🙂 I give both of them 5/5 stars!

Spectacularly hysterical romantic comedy!

I absolutely adored this audio book.

It is, quite literally, an account of the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson. Poor girl! She is a delightful self-made business woman with a handbag designing company. However between her beauty, blonde hair and southern demeanour, she is often mistaken for a bit of a bimbo and an easy target. Thank goodness for her best friend and bar owner, Mike. He keeps her chardonnay glass topped up and regularly provides his shoulder for her to cry on.

There is something about that adage regarding kissing a whole lot of frogs before you find your prince. Love is sometimes where you least expect it..... if only Caroline would open her eyes, she might have avoided the frogs. But where is the fun in that?!!

Lisa Becker has written a fabulously entertaining contemporary romance and Suzanne Barbetta has brought the story to life. Her narration really captures the subtle nuances of the various characters' personalities and reflects the intricacies of the relationships between the characters.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining listening experience!
