Great book, poor narration

Very well researched and written, let down by only tolerable narration. Still a fan of Ben MacIntyre.

An incredible telling of an incredible history

This book was thoroughly and meticulously researched, an incredible undertaking in and of itself. The author has shown the characters to be human in what were, in cases, absolutely inhuman situations. While some military historians fall under the spell of the heroes of their stories, making them larger than life, MacIntyre portrays his characters much as I believe they were in life...flawed humans with their own foibles and personal demons, who accomplished great deeds, often running on only their own determination and inability to quit. Job well done sir.

What a rollicking listen!

The British accent of the author perfectly sets of his frequent witty twists of phrase in this blow by blow telling of the inception, characters, and activities of the WW2 SAS.
While I often had to look up the locations on maps, wished there had been less dismissive mention of the work of the French resistance, and expected there to be some mention of British women spies, I did also marvel at how much was accomplished despite (and sometimes because of) the lack of today’s technology.
I recommended this to several friends interested in WW2.

I would read (and have) any book written by MacIntyre. an excellent historian with the ability to write as a first hand witness.

It is almost unreal what these men went through and were able to accomplish in the name of freedom. Highly recommend this history of the SAS.

Great listen , lots of “I never knew “ information . I buzzed thru this so quick I wish there was more . .The true story line , characters and reader made a great combination.

The moment I finished this audiobook I felt compelled to listen to it again to spend more time with these heroes.

Superb

Fascinating story and humbling accounts of the greatness of what this small group was able to accomplish. A well researched story that reads like a fiction novel - the reality is so much greater than any fiction.
