CSI meets The Sixth Sense in this compelling horror/thriller that has already been optioned by the producers of The Dark Knight Returns!

JONAH MILLER, REVIVER. Able to wake the recently dead for testimony that is accepted in courts worldwide, the use of revivers has long been a routine part of police investigation. But now those who consider it blasphemy are in resurgence - well-funded and gaining ground, they threaten the work of Jonah and his colleagues in the Forensic Revival Service.

Jonah is still recovering from the injuries received after unearthing the existence of a creature bent on terrible destruction, a creature defeated at the cost of many lives. Then the discovery of a bizarrely mutilated corpse makes Jonah suspect that the victory was not as complete as it seemed, and that not all the evil was destroyed.

For in the darkness, shadows are waiting. And they are hungry . . .

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Ari Fliakos's performance strikes the ideal balance between total immersion in Jonah's character and a storyteller's gift to race along with the plot. The listener becomes immersed in Jonah's periods of depression and loneliness, as well as his determination to stop the evil looming at death's door.” —AudioFile Magazine

“(A) gripping conspiracy thriller.” —Tor.com

“Supernatural thrillers don't get much better than British author Patrick's assured debut, the first in a trilogy…Patrick has carefully thought through the implications of this phenomenon, including religious objections and insurance issues, and maintains the suspense throughout.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“This is a gutsy book…Jonah himself [is] a lead character who has what it takes to anchor a genre-bending series. An interesting debut.” —Booklist

“A skillfully plotted and compulsively readable supernatural thriller” —The Guardian

“The first of what promises to be a terrific trilogy. A superbly fleshed-out cast of characters, including Jonah's amiable friend and revivalist technician Never Geary, add ballast to a story which gives us some brilliantly spooky moments, melds crime and the paranormal in a cracking, page-turning thriller and asks serious moral questions about the exploitation of the bereaved. An impressive, intelligent and exciting debut.” —Lancashire Evening Post

“Highly recommended.” —Neal Asher, International bestselling author of The Departure

“A thrilling high-concept book that crosses numerous genres. Chilling and emotional in all the right places” —Mark Charan Newton, author of the Legends of the Red Sun series

“A brilliant, original and very scary concept - which Seth Patrick carries off with chilling aplomb.” —Peter James, author of the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series

“A highly original story skilfully told, a thriller that twists and turns all the way to the end.” —Simon Kernick, author of A Good Day to Die

“Patrick has created an entire forensic discipline, all backed up with authentic (at least, to this non-scientist) and utterly believable detail. I was completely absorbed by the weird take on the world he has created between the covers of this book. Heartily recommended.” —Susan Moody reviewing for promtingcrime.blogspot.com

This story exceeded my expectations! It was a fantastic and twisted listen with a great narrater! I highly recommend to those who enjoy sci fi and murder mysteries.

Great listen

A little slow at the beginning but hang in there! It gets better. The narrator is a good one but, didn't do much to relay excitement and/or tension so you'll have to use your imagination.

Great book

Life after death of some kind has been confirmed, but of what kind? What if some people can communicate with those who have recently died through physically contacting them and asking them questions?
What if their ability to communicate can be enhanced by the use of certain drugs?
What if individuals who previously were not able to communicate with those who have recently died are able to communicate with those who have recently died if they have been prescribed certain medications? What if it takes a long time to make contact with a person who has died because of the length of time it has been since they died or the amount of damage that there was to them as a result of their death? What if a decedent decides to come back to life through the person who is trying to communicate with them? Would armed forces of various nations have interest in developing such programs? What if they realize that they needed to kill someone and then have someone communicate with the dead person to confirm that they are getting accurate testimony? What does one country do to make sure that it’s soldiers are not subject to the interrogations into the minds of the soldiers when they die?
What happens when those who are able to communicate with the dead with the use of chemicals find that they are not completely able to eradicate the memories and invasions by those they have tried to interrogate. What if there are nonhuman forces, evil forces that want to invade the minds of those who are interrogating the dead. What if? What if? What if?...

Captivating, compelling, futuristic, horrific

I was completely sold on this story to begin with. I loved the scientific take on it, the idea that this could be explained away by particular biological and psychological processes. Then it went cliche in the third act and my heart was broken. It was a good book, but it promised greatness. Four stars for the first three quarters, two stars for the last quarter.

Brilliant premise let down by finale cliche
