Publisher's Summary

A Black Mirror-style sci-fi short story collection about the perils of our virtual reality future - and whether we're already living in it.

It's a future where you can simulate any fantasy you want. But some people want some very dark things. You can plug into your own private world. Your dreams are indistinguishable from reality. Do what you want, dream what you want, be what you want.

It sounds like a paradise. But paradise has its price. And some people's idea of paradise is everyone else's idea of hell.

Restricted Fantasies is a Black Mirror-style collection of short stories about lives lived inside and outside of virtual reality. The advent of simulated realities raises questions of philosophy and technology that drive at the core of our nature as humans-and in the tradition of classic sci-fi, the stories in this collection wrestle with these questions and with the shape of things to come.

You'll meet a child protective services agent tasked with rescuing children being raised by Neo-Nazis in an illegal simulation of their own darkest fantasies.

You'll meet a man who discovers the cheat code to our reality-and watch as it all goes horribly wrong.

You'll go on a futuristic Rumspringa with an Amish woman who lives it up in virtual reality for a few years before deciding whether to go home to the last unplugged community on Earth.

You'll peek into the lives of virtual reality addicts, aliens, and mad billionaires.

And you'll journey into Sim-Sing, a simulated prison with a very unpleasant jailer.

Whether you're a fan of classic sci-fi or not, if you've ever wondered whether the things around you are real, whether The Matrix was just a movie, and where the line is between reality and fantasy, you'll love this glimpse into a future that may yet come-and that may already be here.

A brilliant take on reality...

An amazing collection of what our reality could become once we start to dream with the help of technology. A deep naked and honest dive into the human pysche, the author is not affraid to uncover our weirdest fantasies and show that in the end they don't matter, albeit they might be all there is.

Black Mirror drafts

I experienced Restricted Fantasies, vol 1 as a set of early pitches and drafts for episodes of the Netflix series Black Mirror. I felt that many, if not all, of the stories *almost* had it, but ended prematurely, which left me more irked than pleased. We also probably didn’t need five different takes on «it was a dream all along».
That being said, it was enjoyable as a set of what-ifs for the world of virtual reality, and I will buy vol 2 when and if it comes. Just kick it up a notch, Kevin!

great book

Definitely reminds me of black mirror. Very fun, creative stories. Worth the buy for the prison story alone.

An engaging look at a potential digital future

A very interesting, entertaining and thought provoking anthology of stories which look at the role technology has in our lives and the kinds of virtual realities our dreams and even unconscious desires could lead us to. The characters and worlds vary immensely; from an Amish woman's experience in the digital eqiivalent of rumspringa, to stark premonitions of a future in which we are all plugged into simulations.

The narrator does an excellent job of bringing the work to life, doing equally well with both male and female characters of very different types, creating a unique character with each.

Missing a tie in

This compendium of stories, as they were all of a similar note, would have been better with a tie in story at the end. That being said not as hard or as dark as black mirror. Or as compelling as Philip K. Dicks electric dreams. It does fill in a lighter note on audible for when I'm walking the dog.
