Publisher's Summary

Crowns often come with a price.

For Terosh, the Kireshana - or “renewing fire journey” - offers a chance to prove himself as a man, not just the spare prince. However, first, he must escape his father’s smothering presence.

For Reia, a Ranger sworn to protect royals, the task of keeping the prince safe turns complicated when the fool runs away from his private guards.

After an explosive meeting, the prince and the Ranger decide to travel together. Forces of nature and wild animals are expected dangers, but several predators come with political agendas. When Terosh’s attraction for his Ranger guardian becomes apparent, Reia becomes a pawn in a wider game.

Even access to the fabled god-machines might fail to save them from having to answer a single question: what is one life measured against the fate of a planet?

Fantastic

I love anything MS. Gilbert writes! This was no exception! It is wonderful fantasy, romance, adventure suspense, and sci-fi. It was hard to set it aside and get anything else done. I had a little trouble following things in the beginning, but once familiar with the names of persons and places it all came together. I am going to need to figure out how I can get all of the books in the series. I found books 1-3 for kindle. Are there more? Will there be more? I can't wait to get started on book 2.

Liz Brand is the BEST! I wish all the audio books I have were narrated by her! Thanks for a great performance. I will be looking for your name on other audio books.

A good start

This started out so promising, and then fizzled out to where I lost interest. Alot of confusing and unnecessary parts. On the other hand, narrator did very well and she can sing too.
This audio was given to me free and I voluntarily gave this review.

Plenty of adventure and intrigue.

This story takes you on a much larger adventure than I expected it would. We follow our characters through worlds and intrigues, through deep plots and hints of some sort of broader conflict below the surface. It was well paced, with good emotion. Character development is great for our two central characters. Though everyone else felt more like blurry figures acting on the world as they fade in and out of view. Perhaps this was intentional, along with how little we know about the world through much of the book. In audiobook format, there's a stream of similar sounding names in the beginning, that took me a while to sort out as the story progressed. There's references to cultures, worlds, and powers which took a while to be able to fit into the story because there doesn't seem to be much info about them. Again, this could all have been deliberate to help us share some of the confusion felt by the characters we follow. Though, to me, it is the one thing that kept me from forming a deeper connection to the world. None of that, however, kept this from being a good story and enjoyable listen.

Narration of this book was a pleasant surprise and most definitely made a positive contribution to the experience. It is well paced, has good energy, and makes it easy to identify what character is speaking. The biggest surprise, however, is how well singing was handled. Songs in audiobooks often seem to be a struggle for narrators. Probably most often they seem to talk out the song to avoid attempts at singing. Not so here! Liz Brand has a beautiful singing voice and makes the songs lovely to hear. Well done!

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
