Publisher's Summary

Jacobia Tiptree and her teenage son are used to their Eastport, Maine, home attracting more than its share of houseguests. This year Jake is hoping the plaster dust will keep them away while she finally gets her gem of a fixer-upper into shape - from doorknobs and chandeliers to ghostly phenomena. But when the charming and mysterious Jonathan Raines appears on her doorstep and then just as suddenly disappears, remodeling the house becomes the least of Jake's problems.

Could Jonathan's disappearance have something to do with his quest for a cursed violin that local legend says was hidden by a long-ago owner of Jake's house before he too vanished without a trace? Jake needs to strip Eastport's past of its idyllic veneer before a killer paints her very dead indeed!

This is a great read!!!

This is one of the best mysteries I have read in a long time. Like Jacobia I was stumped as to the identity of the villain. I loved the family dynamics between Jacobia, Wade, and her ex husband. The narrator has a perfect accent for the region. She brings the story to life. I have read the previous three books and plan to read the next book as well. As long as Sarah Graves writes like this, I will read the entire series.

A treasure hunt that gets a little dark

As always Lindsay Ellison Delivers an excellent performance with clear diction, great accent work, and wonderful pathos in her reading. I was never confused with who was speaking and regularly engaged. Good reading work and a solid recording with no problems.

The story itself is an interesting one as we finally go an adventure to learn about some of the previous owners of Jacobia's house. I actually would have enjoyed learning more about previous owners. This book focuses on a particular rascal briefly set up in the previous novels and in the book right before this one (Wicked Fix) who is supposedly haunting the house. The ghost haunting the old house always felt like a vestigial organ to these books as it rarely (almost never) did much to move or change the plot.

Still set several months after Jacobia received papers written by this supposed spook we follow an adventure as several people come to town looking for a lost treasure. Then some of them disappear. Thus we have a fun little story of Jacobia and Ellie trying to navigate the town's social politics as they try to solve a mystery and find the treasure. When the book focuses on this history of the people involved, the puzzle of the mystery, or the other treasure hunters it is an interesting story. Sadly the book meanders adding several scenes and moments that have little to do with these parts which drags down the narrative. As usual Sarah Graves can't help but let a bit of very macabe and dark things sink into the story which fits the setting and previous works but still feels tonally jarring from what is a light hearted treasure hunt.

Overall i had fun, I found it a good story, and I'd recommend it as a stronger work in this series.

Jacobia at Her Worst

I enjoyed the story as I enjoy the series but Jacobia was extremely judgmental and bitchy, especially towards women, including a young girl. Also, just kind of skated over that almost statutory rape thing, eh?

great story

the stories in this series are great..... Interesting.
Most of the characters are well developed.
However, the main character is very unlikable. Flat personality, kind of a bitch and is worried WAY to much about her ex husband. Get over it.
It's not so bad that I won't continue to listen to the series though. The narrator is great at giving regional flare to the other characters.
