Publisher's Summary

With her previous best sellers, Dr. Brené Brown helped us realize that vulnerability is the birthplace for trust, belonging, joy, creativity, and love. Yet a willingness to be vulnerable means accepting that life will sometimes knock us down. Where do we find the strength to get back up? In her research for her breakthrough book Rising Strong, Brené discovered a key factor. "Without exception," she says, "the concept of spirituality emerged from the data as a critical component of overcoming struggle."

In Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice, Brené offers an in-depth exploration of this critical and oft-misunderstood aspect of wholehearted living. Here she defines spirituality as something not reliant on religion, theology, or dogma - rather, it is a belief in our interconnectedness and in a loving force greater than ourselves. Whether you access the sacred through traditional worship, solitary meditation, communion with nature, or creative pursuits, one thing is clear: Rising strong after falling is a spiritual practice that brings a sense of perspective, meaning, and purpose to our lives.

Fabulous--But--

Pretty much everything here is what you've heard if you've already got the book "Rising Strong". Reckoning, Rumbling, Revolution. Sewer rats and scofflaws.
The thing is, I got so much more from this book than I did from the actual basic book. Don't get me wrong; I liked the book, but this one seems to combine it with my favorite, "The Power of Vulnerability".
I believe it's because this is a long lecture performed in front of a live audience (as opposed to a dead one? You know what I mean...) and as such, Brown is in her usual, fantastically fine form. You get all the side-stories of the venerable researcher/storyteller; you get the audience response; you get the further elucidation on various points. You get the absolute warmth and humor.
Expect to learn how to rise strong on a daily basis, to rise strong from the big things that we can usually get crippled from. Grief, forgiveness, our creative and best, most divine selves.
Minor down and dirty Texan language, major joy and laughter raised to the roofs.
I loved this book and have already listened to it twice and expect to happily run to my therapist who is from the Brown neurobiology branch with all the points that I really want to discuss. The question and answer section at the end alone is worth the price.
We're hardwired for story, our brains expect it. Learn to write your own happily-ever-after, even though it means getting up after hard knocks and skinned knees.
After all, we're all just doing the best we can with what we have.
Now? I have this book...!

Shot in the arm from Brene'

I've followed Brene's work for a long time. This 3 her snippet helped shed light on my personal work as well as gave me insight into her other work (parenting and forgiveness) .
The Q&A was spot on. If you're a fan, you won't be disappointed. If this is your first intro, then might as well start here!

Amazing and life changing.

Highly recommend this teaching to anyone who wants to live wholeheartedly and impact those around them in a creative and positive manner. Fully believe individuals who do the work to embody these concepts will directly impact healthy and positive transformations of the individuals and culture around them.

Let's get through those difficult rumbles!

What an amazing, honest and open journey of Brené's thoughts and stories about what makes up a spiritual practice in her Rising Strong Practice. The talk was enlightening and the questions and answers afterward added even more jewels to this treasure of a talk.

My skepticism gladly meets Brene's Brilliance!

What did you love best about Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice?

The best part for me was where Brene talks about the process of journaling and writing and how that and other creative hands work is what connects head and heart, and also what gives us a new way of looking at the world, as opposed to constantly seeing a shitty first draft!

What did you like best about this story?

I love Brene's Ellen stories. Her daughter seems seriously equipped at managing life with a high strung type A type person. I love how Brene paints herself kind of neurotic, yet is still so loved.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Spiritual in only the best of ways.

Any additional comments?

I would love to see more on the youngest children as being inclined towards resilience (maybe we learn from mistakes of older siblings?)

Too much audience response

Do not buy this book unless you can take the audience response, usually laughter, after each point she makes. So annoying I did not finish it and wish I could get my money back.

Above and Beyond

I've only recently become familiar with Brene Brown and her work, and while there hasn't been any work of hers that I have disliked, I have to say that this one especially resonated with me. More so than the actual book.

Don't let the word spiritual dissuade you, it's not overly religious. But I think the phrase that especially stuck with me is that we are all innately lovable, innately creative, and innately holy.

spirituality doesn't mean religion.

she explained spiritual growth beautifully, by taking religion out of that word it allows everyone to be spiritual without having to agree on any one religion.

Thought I was buying the actual book!

Where does Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I thought I was buying the book but was actually a recording of the author talking at an event about the book. Still fun and insightful but a little disappointing considering the length and price!

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Brené's anecdotes about her own life were warm and relatable.

What about Brené Brown’s performance did you like?

Brené has a clear and emotive speaking voice. She speaks with conviction and clearly believes the messages she is putting across.

Incredible and essential

I will listen to this over and over for the rest of my time. With one listen I've been inspired, I've learnt, I've laughed and cried and changed for the better. Brené Brown as required reading for all would be a total blessing. It's all about love.

A bit dry

Effectively you're listening to a long speech. The speaker is funny at times. However, there is no beginning, middle or ending. The points made are not very coherent and well supported.

Life changing

I'm a huge Beene fan. This is by far my favourite audio she has produced. If you are unfamiliar with her work, starting here is a brilliant intro into her work but I would recommend starting from the beginning too.

Should be required in schools and workplaces!

Firstly -- those listeners put off by 'spiritual' concepts, fear not. You will find zero issues here. A *very* broad vision of the spiritual is being referenced here.

This material is presented via the lecture + interview format. And while a good companion to the book Rising Strong, it's neither a sequel nor repetition of that content. Personally, I found this more accessible and applicable. It easily stands on its own and there are some fresh ideas not found in Rising Strong.

Brené is especially insightful, relatable and hilarious here and Tami Simon does her justice with some curly questions. Despite being a seasoned listener of this genre, I experienced several aha moments and one solid epiphany. In short, this is the sort of material that can change lives, families, organisations, schools and corporations. I'm already into my third listen.

Love Brene Brown. Live audio, she keeps you hooked and feeling like you are in the room with her. She has you laughing and pondering all at the same time. The messages of spirituality are on point and so simplistically effective. Highly recommend this book.

Another insightful and valuable talk

Would you consider the audio edition of Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version. Audio walks for me because I can listen 'on the run'.

What does Brené Brown bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Authentic personal energy and depth

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

More a deeper inner resonance and affirmation

Any additional comments?

Wherever you are, whatever you are doing there are gems of insight here. Listen.

Brene' always delivers

What made the experience of listening to Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice the most enjoyable?

I always enjoy listening to Brene narrate her own stuff. I would have loved to have her narrate the actual book but this was great.

What about Brené Brown’s performance did you like?

Her sense of humor and that she relates to what she says. Her personal courage to be vulnerable is encouraging.
