Publisher's Summary

A fresh approach to matters of the heart, teaching us that success in love need never again be just a matter of luck.

Love has a history and we ride - sometimes rather helplessly - on its currents. Since around 1750, we have been living in a highly distinctive era in the history of love that we can call Romanticism. And it has been a disaster for love.

Relationships challenges the assumptions of the Romantic view of love. It shows how to develop new attitudes that can lead to a psychologically mature vision of love:

  • That it is okay that love and sex may not always belong together
  • That discussing money early on, in a serious way, is not a betrayal of love
  • That realizing that we are rather flawed, and our partner is too, is of huge benefit to a couple
  • That we will never find everything we need in another person, nor they in us
  • That spending two hours discussing whether bathroom towels should be hung up or can be left on the floor has its own dignity

Full of applied real-life examples, and enlivened throughout with humor and cultural anecdote, this innovative guide paves the way to a new, brighter future for love.

Post Romantic view

This is my second time through this book and I feel like I still have so much to learn from it. This isn’t a normal self-help book, it’s more psychology made into simple language.

Are straight people okay?

Excellent narration, just like the YouTube channel.
The content is a bit basic for people who communicate proactively in relationships and generally work to be the best possible partner (a la my partner and I). But there are some good points about contrasting views and reasonable expectations that I found helpful.

I wish I'd read this years ago

A very insightful and refreshing overview of relationships. As someone who has only ever really known the "romantic" view of love, this book has helped me open my eyes to the possibility that view is flawed and there are other ways of seeing ones relationship.

A great grounding for love.

Especially in the new generation, something else is expected from love and we get confused as to what it should look like. often we leave at the sign of any issues, I was one of those people! it's been a great book to help ground me and set my boundaries for romantic relationships

Really helpful

Listened straight through and then listened again. I found this easy to follow with well placed anecdotes and wry humour, but also incredibly helpful in understanding why having a successful and happy relationship can seem so hard. I should have listened to this 30 years ago!

wow

this book was absolutely fantastic. very confronting at times. there where moments where I found myself getting frustrated because what they where describing counters my personal beliefs, which then forced me to look inward and realise how rigid my own beliefs around relationships and love really where, which lead me to let go of those beliefs. that's not to say I believe in everything they say, but I definitely have a new appreciation for not only my own relationship and those of my past, but for all the different relationship types that others may be involved with. I'll definitely need to go over this one a few times to absorb it all, and I can definitely see why some people might hate this book because of how confronting it can feel sometimes, but yeah, really really recommend!
