The Borinqueneers: Puerto Rico’s 65th Infantry Regiment captures the remarkable and often overlooked history of Puerto Rican soldiers who served in the U.S. military. Through their unique journey from segregation to recognition, the book highlights their courageous service, enduring discrimination, and the pride of their cultural identity. It draws listeners in with powerful stories of heroism, starting from their formation during World War I and continuing through major military campaigns in World War II and the Korean War.

The narrative explores how the Borinqueneers, despite facing racial prejudices and being treated as second-class soldiers, performed extraordinary feats in battles across North Africa, Italy, and Korea. Alicea delves into their deep connection with Puerto Rico’s culture and history, showing how they navigated the linguistic barriers and maintained pride in their heritage while serving under the American flag. Their story, culminating in the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014, is one of bravery and the fight for recognition both on the battlefield and within the U.S. military system.

Listeners will be moved by the personal accounts of Borinqueneers, their families, and commanding officers, which make clear the price they paid in pursuit of both military victory and civil rights. The book evokes admiration for their resilience, the discrimination they faced after heroic deeds, and the battle for equality long after the war ended. By the time listeners reach the closing chapters, the desire to see the Borinqueneers receive the full recognition they deserve becomes palpable.

Alex Alicea’s book urges listeners to reflect on the legacy of these soldiers, drawing parallels to modern issues of identity, military service, and racial inequality.

I loved this book! To learn about Puerto Rico was awesome. From how they went from indigenous Roote’s to modern times. Most people truly have no idea how much that takes. This book gets in ass deep to tell even how Columbus arrived. And, I was absolutely all over that part. I adored reading this. I think they did a terrific job. My one and only complaint. Is I wish there was more.

I move to learn history lessons!
