I love these books but couldn't stand the narrator.

I've read all of gun brooke books and these are some of my favorite. I'll get all of them that come to audible but I hope they get a new narrator. Her voice is very harsh, she either doesn't pause or she pauses in the wrong places. The main female character and her Male XO voice are hard to tell apart. She might do well in her performance in other books but this one she completely missed the mark. It was almost painful to listen to at times.

Took Too Long

It took too many days to finally get through this book. The story was ok, but the narrator made it dreadful to listen to. Uuuggghhh, nothing worse than a lack of enthusiasm when at an apex in storylines. It was beyond dreadful just listening, but I spent hard earned money for this luxury of listening to an audio book purchased. I see it’s “Book 1” but the narrator deters me from the next book in series!

Awesome series! Terrible Narration!

What did you love best about Protector of the Realm?

This Series of books is great fun! Especially if you love space operas. I love the universe that Gun Brooke builds. Especially the normalization of queer relationships. The romances are engaging and keep you reading just to find out what happens next.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Protector of the Realm?

The tension and attraction between the two main characters Kellen and Rae. Watching the story and their relationship unfold was very entertaining.

Would you be willing to try another one of Hilarie Mukavitz’s performances?

No, I did not enjoy the narration of these characters. I felt that she was off base with the voices she gave characters. The conversations between characters were often ridged and awkward. Not sure if this normally the way she narrates, but I would not actively look to listen to a book narrated by her again.

Who was the most memorable character of Protector of the Realm and why?

Kellen for her complexity and loyalty. She was a very interesting character to get to know.

Any additional comments?

Great series, but it might be better to read these yourself. Although part of me wishes they would be rerecorded with a better narrator in the future. It would be a fun addition to my audible library. I plan on reading these books again in the future.

More please!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, fun listen. Love the sci fi story. I've read the next one in this series and I am hoping they produce the audio for the whole set.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Protector of the Realm?

The Red Dragon in action, and the revelation of who the protector really is.

Which scene was your favorite?

Space ship battle scene.

If you could take any character from Protector of the Realm out to dinner, who would it be and why?

The author, because she did a hell of a job coming up with all the characters.

Compelling Sciience Fiction

Aliens, space ships, worlds in conflict. A well crafted cliff hanger with well developed. characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look foreward to the rest of the series.

good book -poor narration

I have read the books in this series and have fully enjoyed them. I was so looking forward to the audio side to enhance the story further but was disappointed by the narrators performance.

Not sure

I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this. the bugging is disjointed and Skippy and yet feels like it drags forever. the story itself is interesting although with the standard non-scifi scifi issues; all aliens are incredibly human like in every way. the science behind the tech isn't totally thought thru. and so on. the ending was interesting and a bit intense.
the narrator also I've got nutral feelings about. for one thing she had good flow but the main character feels like she has no emotion and no inflections.

So disappointed.

I love this series I have reread it a couple of times over the years. So disappointed that the narrator was so awful I couldn’t bring myself to listen.

I wish the author would record her stories with a different narrator.

Bad narration

I tried to give this book a chance despite the bad reviews but I should have listened. Narrator was awful. She couldn't remember what accents she was doing for which character and I felt like she was reading to a child. At certain points there were weird echo and I could hear when she got closer or farther away from the mic. The author had a great idea for the story line but unfortunately it all fell through. I wasn't even able to finish the book.
