Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

All leaders of nations are constrained by geography. In this audiobook, now updated to include 2016 geopolitical developments, journalist Tim Marshall examines Russia, China, the US, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Japan, Korea, and Greenland and the Arctic - their weather, seas, mountains, rivers, deserts, and borders - to provide a context often missing from our political reportage: how the physical characteristics of these countries affect their strengths and vulnerabilities and the decisions made by their leaders.

Marshall explains the complex geo-political strategies that shape the globe. Why is Putin so obsessed with Crimea? Why was the US destined to become a global superpower? Why does China's power base continue to expand? Why is Tibet destined to lose its autonomy? Why will Europe never be united? The answers are geographical.

Great book - I love the description of the land features. But come on... where is the PDF for the maps?

Where are the maps?

of all the history books i've read, this book brings light to new issues i hadnt realized before. i love the audible version but really missed the visual accommodation of a map.

i did not find this book political but instead found it very 'matter of fact' and neutral. the book covers all continents and many countries fairly and without predigest.

this is a book i will listen to again...after i check out a topographical map!

Great book but need a map!

Good read with very modern examples. Details are deep enough for good insights but not so deep that it loses the general purpose of the book.

The topics discussed in this book are important. It is interesting to examine the world through the lens of geography, and how the natural world shapes our politics. However, I think the author bites off more than he can chew. It’s too much to tackle every major region in the world, and try summarizing how geography has impacted the history, present, and future plans of major countries. And too often, the author would veer off from talking about geography to mention a myriad of hypothetical scenarios and conflicts that could occur between countries. I think the author would benefit from a more narrow focus and sticking to his original thesis.

Interesting, but too broad

I would suggest having a world map and while you are listening to this book. So many interesting facts about geography and how that shapes our lives. Being more aware of the world makes a difference in the way we see ourselves and others.

Fascinating worth the read!

Excellent historical information, well presented, and easy to listen to. I appreciated the objectivity which presented facts and never pushed a political view. Really well done.

Easy listen, very informative and objective.

written at about the freshman in college intro to poly science level. good info and nicely written, but not written at a very deep level. For the right audience this book is perfect.

and for the record, it s not necessary to have the maps referred to in the title, but I'd you aren't familiar with geography it is joyce to be able to quickly pull up google maps. it's all you need.

jump start your understanding of geopolitics

Tim Marshall has a incredible ability to explain the geopolitical hot spots around the world. May need one more chapter. Just to explain the Trump effect to all these areas.

Terrific

Ever wonder why one country succeeds while another falters? Why some areas of the world are always in conflict? Why decisions are made on a geopolitical level? This book is for you, providing an exceptional background and rationale for many of the questions above.

Must Read for Students of the World

I really enjoy this book. From what could be a dry subject the author (and narrator) made it interesting and intriguing. Not only did I learn a lot it put many of the news and events in today’s world into focus and understanding. It really shows how the media reports are shallow pools and the deeper meanings left untapped in global politics. Highly recommended. Note: I really like listening to Scott. Bricks narrations. Top shelf.
