Publisher's summary

He was the only person she trusted. Now, she can’t even trust herself.

Jack

After escaping from an abusive halfway house, “Jack” Elsie Johnson forges her own path forward as a successful model, determined to forget about the town of Harmony, Maine, her family - and the pain of knowing their betrayal almost cost her her life.

Jared Ross, her first love, isn’t so easy to forget, even though he’s the reason she ended up in the halfway house in the first place. When she meets Jared again, Jack knows it would be safer if she stayed away. She’s a lifetime away from that wild teenager he kissed one forbidden summer. How can Jack learn to trust him again when she doesn’t even trust her own mind?

Jared

He knows they screwed up. Jared Ross has lived with that reality ever since Jack’s father sent her to a glorified juvenile detention center. When Jack ran away, Jared and her brothers never stopped looking for her.

Now Jack has reappeared, a thriving international model with a new makeshift family. But something is deeply wrong with her, something that even a great career and caring friends can’t cover up. If Jared wants to earn her love, he’s going to have to confront Jack’s dark secrets, no matter how costly - or deadly - the price.

Johnson, book 1

At first I thought this was going to be boring and drawn out, but I loved every bit of it, made me laugh, cry, mad, and sad. So many things happened. But in the end it was awesome, didn't hurt that it was written about Maine, where I am from. Thanks for a great book, can't wait to read the rest

Romance, Family, and Misunderstandings

Jacks’ life was easy in the beginning – a loving family, friends. A discovered forbidden love resulted in her being sent to an abusive halfway house. Things can only get better from there, right? Jared shared Jack’s family and was respected by members of the community – well, except for his father. He fell in love with Jack and she was his only true love. Their struggle to return to one another’s arms are detailed thoroughly.

The author, Holly Martin, kept the central love story visible throughout the book. While Jack and Jared had other experiences, Martin did not let her listeners lose sight of the main story. Their struggles were detailed vividly. Each character was well-developed eliciting a response from the listener hoping for true love to win out and just punishment for others. The plot was well planned and executed with several twists.

The narrator, Rebecca Caton, did a good job as narrator. Her voice was smooth and even. She gave the main characters a unique attribute to their voices.

For romance enthusiasts, this is an excellent book.
