Publisher's Summary

Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? Does it change God's mind or ours or both? This book is an invitation to communicate with God the Father who invites us into an eternal partnership through prayer.

Polls reveal that 90 percent of people pray. Yet prayer, which should be the most nourishing and uplifting time of the believer's day, can also be frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery.

Writing as a fellow pilgrim, best-selling author Philip Yancey probes such questions as:

  • Is God listening?
  • Why should God care about me?
  • If God knows everything, what's the point of prayer?
  • Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent?
  • Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seem far away?
  • How can I make prayer more satisfying?

In this powerful listen, Yancey tackles the tough questions and, in the process, comes up with a fresh new approach to this timeless topic.

"I have learned to pray as a privilege, not a duty", he says, and he invites you to join him on this all-important journey.

Excellent

This is the best book on the subject of prayer that I have ever read. I have listened to it several times, and each time I find something new. It stresses the concept of prayer as being time spent with God, and that it is more of a relationship than a one sided dialogue. I would highly recommend this book.

Prayer - a profound open discussion

I am always reluctant reading books on prayer, as I usually expect pat answers and formulas on how to do it "right." Being a Christian for many years, and praying for just as many, I've never felt that I really understand prayer.

Yancy, in this philosophical, apologetic, somewhat theological, and honest work, explains the ins and outs of prayer in a way that has profoundly impacted my life. To be sure, he doesn't have all the answers (he doesn't attempt to). He asks the hard questions about prayer that we all have stirring deep inside us, and gently points us to Christ as he helps us understand the real reason we pray.

This is a must read for anyone.

Enjoy and be blessed!

Yancey's book on prayer tells it like it is and gives the real reasons we should pray. Very helpful book.

Paryer is something we all need to understand.

Where does Prayer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Yancey is a very good writer and he knows his subject. Anyone that prays to God needs to read this book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Talking to God.

Bad theology,

The Chapter on healing is terrible, confusing and wrong. What is God's position regarding healing? Jesus modeled it, God is the same yesterday, today and forever. GOD HEALS PEOPLE TODAY, yes there is a mystery because some do not get healed.

Some great insight, but overlong and disjointed

I read Yancey's "Disappointment with God" prior to this book, and was significantly more impressed. This book offers some great insights, and for me, encouragement in my prayer life; however, after reading I feel I know more about what "goes with" genuine prayer, but less so about what authentic prayer looks like. To be completely fair, maybe that is always a personal thing though, and doesn't lend itself to an instruction manual (as much as I wish it did).

The performance was good, (I've never heard the word "humble" pronounced with a silent "h" before) but other than the only detractor was what I assume a poor windscreen on the recording mic, as you can occasionally hear the performers recovery breath, and for a time was distracting, but didn't prove a significant hindrance to the material.

Thought provoking and encouraging

Yancey is thought provoking and encouraging. He draws from many sources, theological, biblical, and personal, to encourage the reader to engage in the partnership with God that we call prayer. I caught one error in the audio at chapter 9, 34:26-28 where the reader says "the Apostle Paul" instead of "the Apostle John" when speaking of the Book of Revelation. Otherwise the audio is good.

Read This First!

This is the best book on prayer, and I've read several good ones, that I've read. I especially appreciate all the Biblical examples of prayer. This book is not a guide book nor a formula for praying. It expounds upon what happens to us and our faith as we commune with our Lord. The author explores topics such as: Why pray? Why aren't all prayers answered? What about miracles? Why does God allow so much suffering? And more. I will listen to this book often as a reminder that Prayer Does Make a Difference.
