Power in Poetry

Publisher's summary

In collaboration with the Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD), Audible is illustrating the power of the spoken word with Power in Poetry: Moods That Move. Five spoken word artists created unique pieces of poetry connected by the mood themes of the 2021 FOLD and rooted in the oral traditions of African, Indigenous, and other communities. Their poems serve as an anthem to not just the festival but to the power of diverse voices.

The spoken word artists featured include Lamoi, Noyz, Mahlikah Awe:ri, Joshua "Scribe" Watkis, and Shadiya Aidid. These innovative poets strove to capture the mood and feeling reflected in the diversity of the FOLD, make personal connections to their work, and write short pieces that illuminate the art of oral storytelling. They are five diverse voices and ten pieces of poetry sharing one common thread.

The Festival of Literary Diversity is Canada’s first festival for diverse authors and storytellers. The FOLD provides one-of-a-kind events for kids and adults that engage readers, inspire writers, and empower educators by highlighting important and underrepresented voices. The festival also provides an important space for writers to discuss their craft and create stories that ask difficult questions, expose hard truths, and push literary boundaries. The themes explored in Power in Poetry: Moods That Move include place and belonging, history and hope, and love and longing.

interesting

Very thought provoking, I genuinely felt each poem on a deep level. It took awhile to process, for me, as I like to really dissect each chapter.

Powerful Storytelling, very good performance

While the book is a bit short, it manages to gather around quite good stories with different POVs, and on the good side they are like "modern rap". They don't just yell to something - keeps it simple yet it leaves room for the listener to ask&think

Beautiful so powerful

The music of words. These fine wordsmiths paint such dynamic pictures of their experiences. Holographic, colourful like a diamond in the sunlight. Thank you.

Not particularly impressive

With the exception of Noise, very repetitive and cliché verses.
Three stars. Another Audible Originals FAIL. 😰

Outstanding

Spoken-word poetry, and not a dud in the bunch. Gave me lots of wholesome feels. Simply outstanding.

Very approachable. Don't be afraid of this short collection. If you've been even mildly curious about slam poetry or spoken-word poetry, this is your entry. I'll add that while I was a fan of live poetry slams, going to the Green Mill regularly, I wasn't as fond of simply going to readings. However, this recording is like going to a reading and I loved it!

Thoughtfully Crafted

I was surprised to find this on Audible but so glad I did! Each poem is a short story of sorts and spoken passionately.

New Voices

Nice to hear new voices imparting importance messages. Always good to hear about realities that not everyone experiences.
