Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

Quick and Simple!

I checked out Pimsleur "Quick and Simple" polish from my work library... similar to this, it is an audio based program... Units 1-5 are almost an exact copy of "quick and simple", but the remaining programs take you from there. I take the lessons on my drive to and from the office (lessons are usually ~30 minutes) and best done when alone in the car. The program teaches you phrases which you repeat (often) in the context of a conversation. My Husband is polish, and is amazed that just on lesson 8 I am able to have short conversations regarding country of orgin, language, directions, meals, etc. If speaking polish is your ultimate goal - this is the way! I have struggled with other programs (including rosetta stone), but am excited to complete all 30 of the available Pimsleur lessons. I highly recommend this series.

The way to go

Thought I was not capable of learning new languages until I tried this approach. Stick with it. Repeat lessons until you know them 100%. And it works better than you could ever have expected. Some pronunciation from the speakers can get a bit confusing though all in all they do a very good job - limit looking up the written equivalent unless you are really stuck. Then one day break out a few sentences of a random language to your friends and family and watch their expressions.

Great resource for language learning

Highly recommended! Great narrator. Gives clear instructions for learning pronunciation. Very helpful. It is good to listen to instructions in first chapter about how to best profit from the course.

Just coming back to me..

Wish I had my grandma or dad with me to help me with pronunciation better than the audio on this audio book

It's worth the investment.

I also have Rosetta Stone. But with Pimsleur I actually know what I am saying. If you want to start SPEAKING a language within a week or so, then Pimsleur is definitely it. My only con with Pimsleur is that there are no texts. I purchased this via Audible.

Great way to start speaking a few Polish phrases!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a good method to get you started quickly speaking and understanding a few simple Polish phrases.

What did you like best about this story?

It's very enjoyable to learn another language, and these phrases were a good and practical place to start.

What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The voices spoke clearly and it was well presented.

Any additional comments?

The only thing I wish is that each unit covered a little bit more content, or that more units were included in one book.

Useful for US tourists

If you could sum up Polish Phase 1, Unit 01-05 in three words, what would they be?

Useful phrases in spoken Polish

What did you like best about this story?

It doesn't have one

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

The accents are good, I am told. Authentic Polish speakers.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Alone in Poland: an American tourist toughs it out

Any additional comments?

This reviewing format only applies to novels, not to non fiction books. AS a result I am not able to write the review I intended and feel patronised by the "tick the box" approach.
I would add that this audiobook assumes that the speaker is American, and male. There is not even an option for saying "I'm British" or "I'm Spanish". I find that annoying. Poland isn't part of the US empire, as far as I know...
I bought this to help me to learn some basic phrases to use in the nursery where I work with a Polish-speaking child aged three, whose parents have not taught him English. It has been useful in this regard though there is no grammar and no indication of how to pronounce written words, It's all based on the "Listen and Repeat" approach. I find that somewhat limiting.
Still, for a long weekend in Krakow, it would be plenty. I downloaded the next part, too, and got as far as unit nine. Then my little charge began to learn a lot of English from his playmates.

A tale of love and companionship for the ages

This is a deeply moving tale of an American man looking for love in Poland. Desprately asking any passers where he can find 'beautiful street'. Although his mental state is questionable at times as he stalks women in the market. he eventually finds the love and companionship he was looking for but not in the way you would expect...

learn to speak like you're Polish

Would you consider the audio edition of Polish Phase 1, Unit 01-05 to be better than the print version?

There isn't a print version, this course is designed to get you speaking, rather than reading, Polish

What did you like best about this story?

Each lesson is based around natural conversations that you quickly learn to understand and take part in.

Have you listened to any of the narrator’s other performances? How does this one compare?

So far I have used the Pimsleur language courses to learn Polish, Mandarin Chinese, German, French, Albanian, Hindi, Farsi and a little Hebrew. This one is as good as the others, they are all excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You are advised to do one lesson a day.

Any additional comments?

My Polish friends have commented that I sound Polish when I speak with them, since using this course!

Good for learning very formal Polish

It’s a great method for learning and I’m learning quickly by doing as I’m supposed to. Though the only thing and something I’d say is a big deal, is that’s it’s so formal. My polish partner laughs when I repeat what it says as she says no polish person actually speaks like that. So I’ll be able to speak polish but only to older people or I could get a job in a posh Polish Restaurant

I'M ACTUALLY SPEAKING AND UNDERSTANDING

This is amazing! I've been trying to learn Polish for a year already with no joy. I tried with Colins audio learning Polish and and writing words down and trying to read and repeat them as often as possible. Unfortunately this rarely worked for me and I only remembered bits. I'm not sure if it's the way my brain works as it's worked for others I know. Pimsleurs way has really worked for me, I'm actually speaking and understanding bits of Polish. I'm a plumber based in the UK and my girlfriend is Polish and after just 1 month I've come on leap and bounds, being able to speak with her and friends and hopefully going to Poland this year. THANK YOU

Did the trick

Pimsleur courses are excellent, the Polish course in no way diminishes the method, diminished only by the american accent for me.
