En el siglo XV discurre en Cataluña y Levante bajo la influencia de las dos grandes escuelas renacentistas europeas: italiana y flamenca. En Castilla la pintura del siglo XV sigue un rumbo diferente que hemos de analizar con más detalle. Ante todo, hemos de decir que se nota un sensible retraso entre los estilos renacentistas de Cataluña y Castilla. Es un retraso espacial, puesto que Cataluña se halla en contacto directo con los focos franceses, y mantiene con Italia un ininterrumpido comercio marítimo. Castilla se encuentra un tanto descentrada de las rutas comerciales más frecuentes, y hasta ella llegan las novedades italianas con un considerable retraso.
