Publisher's summary

A Head Full of Ghosts meets Mexican Gothic in Piñata, a terrifying possession tale by author and artist Leopoldo Gout.

Carmen Sanchez is back in her home country of Mexico, overseeing the renovation of an ancient cathedral into a boutique hotel. Her teen daughters, Izel and Luna, are with her for the summer, and left to fill their afternoons unsupervised in a foreign city.

The locals treat the Sanchez women like outsiders, while Carmen's contractors openly defy and sabotage her work. After a disastrous accident at the construction site nearly injures Luna, Carmen's had enough. They're leaving.

Back home in New York, malevolent and unexplainable happenings seem to swarm the Sanchez family, throwing their lives into chaos. And it might be too late for them to escape what's been awakened...

Inspired by the true, horrific history of how the Spanish conquistadors used piñatas to force Aztec children to break their gods, Piñata is a possession horror story about how the sinister repercussions of our past can return to haunt us.

Wow! Great story

I enjoyed listening to this story about a woman who travels to her native land with her daughters and is found by an ancient evil. I enjoyed listening to this story because it reminded me of my own roots. I look forward to listening to more stories from this author and this narrator.

Disappointing

As a Latina, I was truly excited to find a book that digs into the roots & past of my people. But…dang!!!! I’m not even halfway and I just can’t! The story seems to be going nowhere other than the main character is worried all the time….yes, we know she’s worried…let’s move on!! But the absolute worse part was the narration…the narrator was TERRIBLE!!! I’m sure she’s great for children’s books and heck, as a teacher, I would have loved for her to come read to my first graders but for this book that’s supposed to be spooky…omg NO!!! It literally sounds like Dora the Explorer is reading the book…oi!!! I tried but I can’t. Thankful Audible allows returns so I can use my credit on something better.

Poorly written and read yet it’s an important read

The story is fantastic but the writing lacks in sophistication, technicality, and elegance. The narrator was not a good choice either. The first half of the book is soooo slowww. The mother Carmen takes too long to catch onto the problem. And with all simplistic horror and we think “come on, don’t walk down that dark alley”…Carmen could have removed the lock on Luna’s door after the first time there was a problem. This book shines a beautiful light on Aztec, Nahua, and the piñata tradition and I truly appreciate it because I’m half Mexican. It’s just the author’s storytelling and writing skills are lackluster. I think this story would make a great indie movie, though. I’d recommend this book to readers even with its faults because it does tell an important story of culture, tradition, suffering, and the importance of the struggle of our ancestors.

Distracting performance

I couldn't finish this book and that NEVER happens. The story idea was interesting but the writing was terrible. Lots of telling not showing. The performance of the reader was what really kept me from finishing. It was bad over-acting.

What a disappointment!

Worst book I’ve listened to on Audible. Gory, sickening images gratuitously read, almost savoring the words. Sorry I spent the time on this book.
