Midwestern librarian Letitia Thornquist didn't have the right stuff to run Thornquist Gear, Inc. That was the bottom-line opinion of Joel Blackstone, the seasoned CEO who had built the small Seattle sporting goods store into an industry giant. But Letty's rich Uncle Charlie willed her the company, and now she was bubbling with enthusiasm to have Joel, a perfect mentor, show her the ropes.

Teaching her the business was all Joel grudgingly planned to do... until the sensuous curves under Letty's navy suit and the unabashed desire in her wide, innocent eyes left him longing for a personal kind of merger. Soon his sizzling kisses convinced her that she wasn't in Kansas anymore. But no matter how skilled Joel was in the art of love, Letty knew she was at risk in his arms. Behind his tough facade she sensed a world of hurt that cried out for her warmth and understanding.

She realized the "L" word might never be spoken if trust didn't make them perfect partners 9 to 5.... and in the loving after-hours of midnight to dawn. In a witty, classical duel of romance and ambition, Jayne Ann Krentz deftly portrays two fiery opposites caught by an irresistible attraction...in a deliciously spicy tale of life at the top and love in the depths of the heart.

Thirty years ago, literary agents and publishers pigeonholed the romance novel genre, at that time, as requiring a bull-headed, keep the female lead in the dark for her own good, type of male lead.
Of its type, this is well-written but it shows its age in that the male lead does not at all consider the female lead to be his equal nor legitimately a decision-maker.

This novel now is 30 years old. Obsolete he-man male lead in style.

Reallllllly hated Joel! I get the idea of making the two characters so very different to show how they balance each other in the end, but almost stopped reading as the Pompous A-s repulsed me. McFadden still irritates me with her voice always making the lead female sound as if on the verge of tears.

Well-written

This is one of my favorite JAK books. Thre story is now somewhat dated, but it still has the aspect that I love the most: 2 very different finding both respect a CD love. The excellent and varied narration brings it to life in a new way.

An old favorite reborn!

This is one of my favorite JAK books. I have the paperback book, the ebook and the audiobook. There was a problem with the audible/Kindle connection and so I just listened to it Instead of read/listen. Quite a few of the kindle/Audible books have not been connecting, hope the problem is fixed soon. Anyway I enjoyed listening to this book again.

Older contemporary offering from this popular author. Great story and characters, romantic suspense with humor. Well done!

A man that won't listen even when the engagement is off and his bride to be not.,quite her job and moved to Seattle from the mid west. She may have been a librarian but she's smart and looking forward to a new life as part owner of sporting goods store and close to her father and his pregnant second wife. Add a couple of women who have fears that paralyze them. The plot goes on with answers for everyone and only one man dead and a new baby heathy and crying.

Fast and sweet

I really enjoy Jayne Ann Krentz’s books and recordings. This story has charm with the underestimated librarian and the overachieving CEO. The other storylines of her father and his early life add to the story without bogging it down.

A couple of nits: the CEO is generally considered the highest ranking manager in a company and that president is the second-highest ranking. That was reversed here. For a (c)1992 book, it ought to have been caught by the editor. The over use of “boss” got wearing.

The male character is so disgusting I have not been able to finish this one. Wish I had not purchased it.

MMC is a condescending, arrogant, controlling, untrustworthy, manipulative, sabatoging, sexist, angry, irrational, immature, unlikable, ignorant, mean person. He's also not very bright and he's a bully. There simply isn't enough redemption in this book for his character. I realize it's an 80's book, but seriously, this one went way too far. The "looming" parts (when he does it simply to physically intimidate her) really bothered me.

The thing I found to be the saddest factor, is just how many men STILL behave like this 40 years later.

all in all this was a good book not great but good. i dont so many people who talk as these characters did in this book. i love characters who are more realistic and i understood where the author was headed so i didnt mind. besides that the banter between leti and joel was nice to hear over all.
