Publisher's summary

New York Times best seller Pepper Winters delivers another delicious dark romance.

"I'm not the hero in this story, girl. You'd do best to remember that."

Once upon a time, I was an 18-year-old psychology student.

Now, I'm a man's property.

Stolen and sold, I've been decorated in bruises since the day my world changed two years ago.

I suffer in silence, I crave freedom, but I never break.

I can't.

Until he arrives.

Elder Prest, the only man to look at me and see me. The only man more ruthless than my owner.

He wants me for reasons I don't understand.

He claims me for one night then leaves and never looks back.

Until he returns.

And life becomes much more complicated.

Love the story! Disliked the male narration!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I wouldn't recommend this audiobook, as it does not enhance the reading/listening experience. Had this been my first read of this book, I may not have gone on to read the series.
This is the second time reading Pennies and the first time listening while I read. As an avid reader, I love to listen while I read. When the narrator is spot on, it brings the book to life.

Kylie did an extraordinary job as Pimlico, however, Eric's narration was poor. He read as if he was just simply READING, monotone, boring. There was no dramatization, no inflection, no emotion for the character of Elder. When changing his voice for Alrik, his voice took on some character. I actually turned down the volume on the male parts of the audio, so I could read it in my head, in my own voice. It really is a shame, Pepper Winters is an incredible author, and this audiobook could have been phenomenal had there been a different male narrator.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

This is not Eric's first audiobook. I actually looked up his work because I was so shocked that his voice was so boring, lacked inflection, emotion, drama. The character is fighting an internal battle, heated and demanding conversations with Alrik, dominating and compassionate conversations with Pim. You get no of that with his narration. Very disappointing. I'll read the next book but will not spend the money for the audio.

Heart-breaking

Thought-provoking. Heart-breaking. Profound. Gut-wrenching. Those were my initial thoughts. I know they don't all sound great, but this book is the perfect dark and gritty romance.

I've never read anything this dark and been this moved. Pepper Winters is a masterful writer. Although my heart pounded and broke for Pim, I loved everything about this book. In the face of pure horror, our heroine, remains strong. That was key for me. Add great writing to a great heroine with a stunning storyline and that leads to 5 Stars!!

Very dark and violent.

yeah...so. this is way NOT a romance. it is about a girl sold into slavery, beaten and tortured. until she is whisked off into the night with a severed tongue and a man who only wants her to heal so he can have her....now i have to try to go to sleep.

If you enjoy hours of abuse then you may enjoy

I really enjoy this author but once I was over 2 hours into the book and the girl was still simply bring tortured and mentally abused I just couldn't go on. There needs to be glimmers of hope to keep the book interesting. This is not as good as Buttons and Lace.

Penny for your thoughts

This story was hard and unrelenting on my soul. I’m all for a dark read and love PW stories, but this one had me shuddering from the first word. Gruesome doesn’t describe the torture. No reprieve. Just pain. My heart ached for Pimlico. I wanted to stop reading just so the pain would stop, but I couldn’t. I had to know if she would make it.
3 & 1/2 Stars
Honestly, I’m not sure I’ll continue the series because the words gouged out my eyes with their horror and strangled the air from my lungs.

Hard listen but AMAZING story

What made the experience of listening to Pennies the most enjoyable?

This was without a doubt one of the hardest listens I've ever done. The book delves so deep into the depravities of humanity and human trafficking....The story is so raw and real. There were moments I wanted to come out of my chair with anticipation. Elder's entrance into the story and the hope he her is what got me to to the end. I cannot wait to start the next book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pennies?

THE ENDING!!! I litterally felt like I was on the verge of a mini anxiety attack waiting to find out what happened to her.

Which character – as performed by Kylie C Stewart and Eric Rolon – was your favorite?

BOTH! I have listened now to several books by both of them and they are A-MAZING together. It's like the most perfect reading duet.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Penny for your thoughts....(I <3 Elder!)

Any additional comments?

Highly recommend this...just go in knowitng there are some really raw/hard to read contents. If you can get through them...it's so worth it.

Brutal

This is billed as a dark romance, but there's not much romance.

This is a story of monster sadists kidnapping, selling, then repeatedly raping and torturing a young girl for years.

It's a dark story. Brutal. Be warned.

Cliffhanger.

Narration was okay.

Horrific premise for “romance”. Involves human sex trafficking.

This book is extremely difficult to get through since it is about human sex trafficking. I can’t imagine where a persons mind must be to have created it. I am horrified by the atrocities females must endure in the face of such real life evil. I would not have purchased this book had I known the storyline. This is not a subject to be marketed as Romance.

Dark and depressing

This was a hard book to listen too. I had a hard time getting through it. I’m sure it could be something that actually goes in in these days. The book sounds like it could have been written by someone who actually experienced exactly what girls have to go through with human trafficking.

A hard listen

This story was so very hard to listen to. So much extreme violence done to a female and why? Just to own someone, to inflict so much pain?? Her “owner” was a sadistic s.o.b.
I found myself in tears several times listening to the descriptions of torture no one should endure. Yet human trafficking is happening now.
This story has affected/depressed me and I’m not sure I can listen to the remainder of this series.
