Publisher's summary

In 1918, on the bloody grounds of war-torn France, a young soldier named Mark Tudor learns the stars are closer than he thinks.

In a single act of courage, the young American grunt saves an interstellar soldier from certain death at the hands of a vicious killer. Afterward, she promises to show him the stars. Mark will begin his new life far away from Earth—a life not so different from that of a humble soldier. Out among the asteroids, he learns of swords and honor, starships and empires. He learns what it means to be a Peacemaker.

Along the way, he's joined by Perry, his combat AI companion who helps Mark learn how to survive—and earn a living—among the stars. His first mission is far from simple, and it may prove to be his last. Mark's new enemy is specialized in one thing: killing Peacemakers. And they're very good at what they do.

Join Mark and his crew as they start an adventure that spans the stars themselves... and launches a quiet Iowa farm boy into the ranks of the most lethal guild the galaxy has ever known. Witness the dawn of a new age and the beginning of what will one day come to be known as the Peacemaker Wars.

Includes Stars and Steel, a bonus story from the Peacemaker Wars universe.

Good characters

Liked the many characters though how some seriously mimed Earth tropes needed explanation. Overall, great fun.

Great prequel

Gave a good foundation for the following series. Sets the stage for the grandson’s character. Can’t wait for the next book of this series.

Grandfather story from backyard starship well done

The story flowed, and was very interesting. Keep my interest I was worried that it was gonna be a rip off of backyard starship, but it actually improved on backyard starship

Best Book Yet!

Well done to the whole team to bringing the entire Backyard Starship series. Looking forward to this next series as it unfolds. I love Jeff but having Tom come and do this is Genius! At a couple of points when listening I swore Mark Tutor was going to call for Whiskey and Cigars on Jellybird.

Excellent

Brilliant idea to write the back stories to so many of the foundational and pivotal characters in the "Backyard Starship" series.

Such an awesome start back at the beginning

If you’re already a fan of backyard starship, just get stuck in. It’s an awesome expansion and remember Perry is frickin AI mechanical bird, he can change his voice whenever he wants to any accent that suits his current phase in life.

If you don’t know backyard starship, this is also a great place to start. It is a prequel, but I envy your position to consider starting an awesome universe from a completely different vantage point. Give it a try, it won’t disappoint and if you for some reason don’t get sucked in, go get the first book and start there!

Kept me interested

I really like Terry Magert's books so I was happy to stumble onto theses. I like the storyline. It wasn't obvious what is going to happen so it kept me interested. I love the humor between the main character, the Bird, and the ship. I can't wait to read the next one.
