Publisher's Summary

Hero or villain. A choice that every Icon, a person born with powers, eventually has to make if they don’t want to live a life of mediocrity. For most Icons the decision is easy. Just do what your parents did. Then, there is Hunter Monroe. A powerful young Icon born from the unimaginable union of a hero and villain.

Seventeen years later Hunter is seen as a half-breed abomination by some, and as a certified powerhouse by others. With his time at Purgatory Academy, the premier institute for Icons, coming to an end, Hunter must embark on a two year internship with a supergroup.

After being selected to intern with The Imperial Lords, the world’s leading supergroup, Hunter’s life begins to slowly unravel.

Between a shaky love life, facing an old rival, and seeing his mentors for who they truly are, Hunter is in for the longest two years of his life. Things get more complex when an Icon serial killer emerges with unthinkable power, and begins to shed light on Hunter’s life that will leave him wondering if he should use his powers to save the world, or conquer it.

Great Start

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I have recently been on a super hero kick, so when I saw this book pop up on Audiobook Boom I jumped right on the chance to listen to it and I'm glad I did. It was a great first story for jumping into a new world. Listened through the book over 2 days. Narration was good and enjoyed his take on the characters.

I really enjoyed the main character. Not an antihero, but a balanced one. He doesn't want to be just be a hero that looks at the world in two shades. He empathizes with villains and respects heroes. It's much easier to place yourself in the shoes of Hunter than some super heroes. He follows heroes and villains and knows what they can do and what they have done, just like a kid would actually do growing up in a world of super heroes. He's not really a shallow or predictable character. There were many times when I I thought I could predict how he was going to react or answer certain parts of dialogue and he went the other way.

The story was also good. It's not overly complicated and just fun to listen to. The way the story flows quickly and gets right to the point and just runs smoothly into the action. There isn't really much filler. That is good in some ways but to me it made the story go by fast. It was kind of the only thing I wish was a bit different. I wanted more...probably because I'm greedy and listen to too many 24 hour long audiobooks. It's the first book in the series and I imagine a greater understanding and attachment to the characters will come as the next books come along. Hope the author writes fast because I want to see where this is going soon.

Everything comes down to a choice: hero or villain?

A world populated with beings with powers. They all reached an age where hey had to make a choice: hero or villain? Once that choice was made they were to never mix again. A hero and a villain having a relationship was taboo. A hero and a villain breeding? That would be an abomination. And abomination is just one of the things they called him. Spawn of a forbidden relationship. Both parents died defending the world side by side. But there is no redemption for a villain. Now their son must try and decide what he will be. His choice will not be easy and as the story develops the choice may be impossible to make. Some serious story changing plot drops will keep you on the edge of your seat. Leaves it open for more to come. Really great story and well narrated. The narrator does a great Christopher walken style voice for infinity. Enjoy it. Great new Superhero Series!

This book was a lot of fun! If you like superhero novels then this one won't disappoint. I have two son's who are big into them so when I saw this one pop up on my reading list I jumped on it. I loved the plot, character development, and how it wasn't a typically predictable superhero story. The narration was great and only made it that much more enjoyable. Definitely a great book for the superhero readers and moviegoers. I am hoping book two isn't too far out from release as I can't wait to read more. On a morality level for the parents out there checking reviews there is violence as to be expected in the super hero category, but there is also some bad language (including a few f-bombs). I would say it's probably about PG13 to R level rating.

This is great

This story is like the movie Sky High but the lead is Warren Peace instead since he also attend a superhero school but is a outcast due to mixed heritage. The characters are interesting and well developed. There is action, humor, and twists. The narrator does a great job of moving the story long and making character stand out from each other. I especially love the voice used for the villian which is christopher walkenish, The story is well written and fun.

I loved this book!

This book was awesome. Super heros, villains, and powers are in right now and books like this are why. The characters are creative and interesting with a wide variety of powers. The narration is excellent and really brings the story to life giving each character a distinctive voice. I will 100% be buying book 2

not the best superhero series intro but far from the worst, some good characters, some good mythology, and a pretty predictable but, still interesting twist

Great beginning!

This is a very promising start to what will hopefully be a thrilling series. Drew Hayes has some competition here!

A great super hero story

I have now read/listened to a few super hero books over the past few months and I am really enjoying the genre. This one stands a little different with the main character not knowing if he is going to be a hero or villain.
The story is nicely paced with a good mix of action and scene setting/story setting. The narrator does a great job managing both male and female voices without sounding silly.

Overall this was a very enjoyable story and I will be reading book 2 next!!!

Good superhero story

This was an interesting and enjoyable piece of superhero action, with the author setting up an interesting world where the nature of new superheros and villains has become formalised. The young icons (powered people) having to choose their path towards the end of their school years, once they have been trained in their powers.

While this decision is an easy one for many, it is not so simple for the main character, Hunter Monroe, as he has had a difficult time growing up as the child of a union between a hero and an infamous villain, both of whom perished while fighting against an alien invasion. He still has his doubts about whether or not being a hero is right for him as he sees the grey of many situations rather than the simple black & white.

The narrator's performance was a strong one with a good range and distinctive tones that ensured the varied cast could be clearly distinguished from each other, nicely enhancing the book as a whole.

Overall, a very entertaining introduction to this superhero world with a strong story and good character development, I will look forward to future instalments.

Refreshingly good superhero story

I powered through this in 2-3 days as once I got going the hours just disappeared.

This reminds me of the anime My Hero Academia as in most of the populations have varied powers or combination of powers, there are schools to learn how to be a hero but also a darker supervillain side to society.

The book characters are in their late teens but very relatable and aren't just walking cliché. I actually cared about their lives, backstories, understanding their motivations for each decision they made. The different powers very interesting and fights were exciting. Also it didn't shy away from being quite dark at times in the story.

This was a great first book which didn't have a too complicated story but was a nice taster of what I hope is a great series to come. It ended with some wider questions and me wanting to know what is going to happen next.

The narrator was great and I was never board of listening the their captivating voice. Good recognisable character voices and good depth of emotion and good pace of reading.
