Publisher's Summary

Hero or villain. A choice that every Icon, a person born with powers, eventually has to make if they don’t want to live a life of mediocrity. For most Icons the decision is easy. Just do what your parents did. Then, there is Hunter Monroe. A powerful young Icon born from the unimaginable union of a hero and villain.

Seventeen years later Hunter is seen as a half-breed abomination by some, and as a certified powerhouse by others. With his time at Purgatory Academy, the premier institute for Icons, coming to an end, Hunter must embark on a two year internship with a supergroup.

After being selected to intern with The Imperial Lords, the world’s leading supergroup, Hunter’s life begins to slowly unravel.

Between a shaky love life, facing an old rival, and seeing his mentors for who they truly are, Hunter is in for the longest two years of his life. Things get more complex when an Icon serial killer emerges with unthinkable power, and begins to shed light on Hunter’s life that will leave him wondering if he should use his powers to save the world, or conquer it.

Great Start

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I have recently been on a super hero kick, so when I saw this book pop up on Audiobook Boom I jumped right on the chance to listen to it and I'm glad I did. It was a great first story for jumping into a new world. Listened through the book over 2 days. Narration was good and enjoyed his take on the characters.

I really enjoyed the main character. Not an antihero, but a balanced one. He doesn't want to be just be a hero that looks at the world in two shades. He empathizes with villains and respects heroes. It's much easier to place yourself in the shoes of Hunter than some super heroes. He follows heroes and villains and knows what they can do and what they have done, just like a kid would actually do growing up in a world of super heroes. He's not really a shallow or predictable character. There were many times when I I thought I could predict how he was going to react or answer certain parts of dialogue and he went the other way.

The story was also good. It's not overly complicated and just fun to listen to. The way the story flows quickly and gets right to the point and just runs smoothly into the action. There isn't really much filler. That is good in some ways but to me it made the story go by fast. It was kind of the only thing I wish was a bit different. I wanted more...probably because I'm greedy and listen to too many 24 hour long audiobooks. It's the first book in the series and I imagine a greater understanding and attachment to the characters will come as the next books come along. Hope the author writes fast because I want to see where this is going soon.

pretty good interested to read/listen to the next

not the best superhero series intro but far from the worst, some good characters, some good mythology, and a pretty predictable but, still interesting twist

Great beginning!

This is a very promising start to what will hopefully be a thrilling series. Drew Hayes has some competition here!

A great first book in this series!

This was a fantastic listen. I thought this was one of the better superhero stories I've listened to recently. The world and character building is well done. The narration, too, is well done. All in all, a fantastic and worthwhile listen.

Loved it!!

I could have devoured this book in one day but it was too special. I wanted to take my time with it and had to force myself to walk away. I finished it today but now I can't wait for the next listen.

I loved this book from the beginning. The main superhero was cheeky but loveable. He was close to his adopted family and had the usual teenage "what will I do when I grow up" angst. This played out against a backdrop of good and evil, with no clear black and white answers to that one. I loved it.

The narration was the absolute best! Males, females, young, old, good guys, bad guys, and a Christopher Walken imitation (whether intended or by accident) were all well delivered. This listen was an absolute treat!!
